The Bodega: Not a Spanish Restaurant, but great pub/restaurant

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

What sounds like a spanish restaurant is a good combination of nightclub, pub and restaurant with many different areas and bars. It is located in an old market hall which has been divided into several new stores with bodega getting the largest part. The market hall was completed in 1843 and known as the "Irish market" (compared to the "English Market" between St. Patrick and Oliver Punkett Street). When the government ordered that a shell factory should be placed in there during WWI, it marked the beginning of the end for this market. after the war, a couple of stalls returned but the market was finally closed as such in 1955.
The area in the ground floor close to the entrance is mainly a restaurant area which becomes more like a big pub in the evening. There are two bars here with plenty of beer, wine and liquor choices. The nicest area in my opinion is the 1902 Tap Room which is a quiet old-style bar kept in dark colours - good place just to enjoy a drink or two. Upstairs, there is the club area with two stylish bars, on some evenings the restaurant area is turned into a dancefloor. Maybe that it is not as stylish as other clubs in Cork, but the combination of all these different parts is the drawing card of the bodega. Of course, there is live music quite regularly.
Didn't try any of the food, but the choice looked quite good, accent on seafood while some dishes had a local touch. The Bodega is part of the Cork Heritage Pub network, an group interested in promoting local pub and beer culture.
