You know you’re in for a very special treat, when you notice that a restaurant uses very little space on their walls outside to advertise their services and instead relies on very positive word of mouth. Located in a former Turkish bath, this is quite possibly the best restaurant in town. The atmosphere inside is very sumptuous: Huge walls adorned by very sensual oil paintings by local artists, tables that allow enough space for their customers, very friendly service and – most importantly – scrumptious, award winning European food make for a very enjoyable experience. Far from being cheap, but worth every cent.
Jacobs on the Mall is my favourite restaurant in Cork city, and has been so for many years now.
The entrance is discrete and looks for all the world like the entrance to one of the many Banks or Solicitors' offices that line this upmarket professional business area of Cork City.
Inside, the restaurant opens up into one very high ceilinged room with several smaller ante-rooms that can be used for small private parties.
The seating is well spaced and there is a balcony along one wall with further seating.
The walls are lined with original art and it's a joy to sit and admire the paintings as you eat.
Along the left hand side of the room as you enter there's a big bar with hundreds of different wines, champagnes, and other drinks that you might wish for.
Food is modern in style and delectably tasty. I have never had a bad meal here.
The usual patrons are the smart ladies who lunch and the business set! This restaurant opens for lunch and dinner. Prices are not cheap, but you really do get what you pay for here.
Favorite Dish: Go for something that little bit different. The menu changes daily here and as all ingredients are fresh, watch out for something new.
My current favourite is the warm chicken liver salad. This is served with mixed leaves, red peppers, fets cheese, crispy fried chorizo, and plenty of delicately fried chicken livers. This came as a main course for lunch and was very filling. I started with the orange and tomato marinated salmon which was nice but just a little bit under-marinated for my taste.
The desserts are to die for and you simply must leave room for a morsel or two. I love the pecan tart with chocolate ice cream. Enjoy it with a glass of Californian Black Muscat - mmmmm.
