Inside the Gaol

I've never been there myself (I know I know - one of these days!!) but I've been told that this is worth checking out - especially if it's a 'soft day' (rainy in case you were wondering) in Cork!

Taped tours are available in several languages

This place was hard to find, around some of the steepest streets I've ever seen in an urban area. It was a good place to spend half a day though once we had found it. Visitors can walk around the jail, with a recorded commentary to explain about the history. Not surprisingly the place is said to be haunted. There is also the Radio Museum here (why here I don't know) which covers the history of, you guessed it, radio.

Opening Hours:
Mar-Oct 9.30-6.00
Nov-Feb 10.00-5.00

Cork City Goal is a 20min walk to the west of the city just follow the sign posts(the open top bus also drops here) you get good views of Cork as the jail is set on a hill above Cork.
The goal was constructed in the early 19th cent and was a mix prison until the early 20th cent it became Corks womens prison there are displays in the cells of prisoners and wardens showing you how the prison was run .
you get a audio set with your fee and the commentry as walk around the prison tells you the type of crimes people were inprisoned for .
at the end of the tour there is a audiovisual display giving you a insight to how a victorian prison was run with crimes punishable with hard labour .
as you enter the prison from the main road above the main door are 3 block off holes were the jibbet was erected for public hangings which Cork public attended in large masses

Visit the Cork Gaol. A rather interesting place. See what jails were like back when your great-great-grandparents were young. They've reconstructed a good section of the building and you can even try to sneak a peak into the sections that are still closed off. Very educational if you can overcome the somewhat cheesy manequins in the cells. Try to go on a weekday, that way you avoid the crowds.
