    Going to the Dogs

Going to the dogs is the Cork way of describing a night at the Greyhound track at Curaheen Stadium.
Greyhound racing is really popular in Ireland with major tracks accsessible from most locations.
In Cork 'A Night at the Dogs' consists of betting on all or any of 10 races, having a drink and something to eat. Catering consists of full sitown meals or fast food from the cafeteria on the ground floor. The cafeteria food is reasonably priced and surprisingly tasty , with local specialities such as CHIPS, CHEESE AND GARLIC. The stadium is fronted entirely with glass giving an uninterrupted panoramic view of the track and the surrounding countryside. Six dogs run in each race and the program you receive when you arrive has full details of their weight, age, previous racing history etc., etc. Betting couldn't be simpler:- a tote point at the end of every seating area, where you place your bet and return to a few minutes later to collect your winnings. I'm sure there are people who take it seriously but for most people betting consists of a euro on the dog they think looks nicest or has the quirkiest name. It's not about gambling, it's about a great night's fun and entertainment. These dogs are whippet thin, longlegged and elegant. Seeing them flash by while screaming loudly for the one you've placed your euro on is a real adrenaline rush. I would especially recommend this to visitors because people tend to let their hair down at the dogs and are probably easier to connect with and chat to.

There is racing Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday evenings, first race at 7.45pm. A taxi from the city centre costs about 4 euro per person in a group of four. Admission, including program, is 8 euro per person.
