An Gaeltacht

by BillNJ

Gaeltacht is the Irish language word meaning an Irish-speaking region. In Ireland, the term An Gaeltacht (or the Gaeltacht) refers individually or collectively to districts where the government recognizes that the Irish language is the predominant language, that is, the vernacular spoken at home. One such district is the Rosguill Peninsula where Downings is located. As such, many signs in the area are in the Irish language. Most of the Gaeltacht areas of Ireland are in the west, and large portions of County Donegal are included. Below is a link to an article about the Gaeltacht which includes a map of the currently recognized Gaeltacht districts in Ireland.http://www.gaeltachttravel.com/gaeltacht-regions/statistics-on-the-gaeltacht-and-the-irish-language/

"Dear Old Donegal" Song

by BillNJ

"Dear Old Donegal" is an Irish song written by Steve Graham in 1942, and its best known singer was Bing Crosby of the United States. The song is about a poor Irishman who left his homeland to emigrate to America. Later, after having become successful, he plans a return to his native County Donegal -- and imagines that they'll throw a big party for him.The lyrics of the song are:It seems like only yesterdayI sailed from out of Cork.A wanderer from Erin's isle,I landed in New York. There wasn't a soul to greet me there,A stranger on your shore,But Irish luck was with me here,And riches came galore. And now that I'm going back againTo dear old Erin's isle,My friends will meet me on the pierAnd greet me with a smile.Their faces, sure, I've almost forgot,I've been so long away,But me mother will introduce them allAnd this to me will say:chorus:Shake hands with your Uncle Mike, me boy,And here...

by kathycollins

Beyond a shadow of a doubt what I loved most about Donegal is the people! Warm and friendly, fun to be with, lively conversationalists, talented musicians...the most spectacular aspect of this spectacular country is the people! See my travelogue about the music scene in the pubs of Donegal!!

Na Tri Mica gCorra.Donegal SEA ANGLINGI took this trip at the end of May 2001.We happened to get a magnificent day, the waters were calm, not a cloud in the sky and plenty of fish.We were taken around Owey Island and Arár Mór, where the cliff scenery and bird life is unbeatable. We decided to end the day with a pint in Arán Mór's beach bar of Phil Bán.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TRIP.For the full information on the trip check the travelogue.

Photo: Altan LakeThis lake is located on the side of Mt Errigal. It's quite a hike, so take a picnic. There is a path all the way down the hillside to it, but the hike back was pretty tough for me. For any fit people out there, it'll be no problem.
