Smirting & The Smoking Ban

Smirting is a combination of the words smoking + flirting, geddit? It started when people had to go out for a ciggie after the ban was enforced, and got chatting to fellow smokers outside on the street, eyes meeting across a cloud of blue nicotine... ;) So you may just meet a local hottie in this way!!

REMEMBER - Since March 2004, you CANNOT smoke inside bars, cafes or restaurants, or anywhere where people are working (e.g. taxis, offices etc.)
The legislation is officially known as the Public Health (Tobacco) Act, see link to it below for a summary.

You may smoke in outside in the street or in designated smoking areas, but never inside a place where people are working (includes offices, bars, restaurants, shops, shopping centres, taxis, etc)

Donegal Gaeltacht

The irish speaking area of Donegal is up around teh isolated North-West of the county around Gweedore. Donegal Irish is considered the most difficult Irish dialect, so dont worry if you dont understand what they're saying up there!! It does sound lovely though.

Means Glen of Coloumba's Church.
Every year at midnight on 9th June, when the pilgrims make a circuit
of 5km, which is marked by a series of stone-slab and pillers inscribed with cross
on the slopes round the village.
Pilgrim must go round the circuit 3 or 7 times, and must always be completed
before sunrise.

Go to a Ceili

learning the steps

A ceili is an evening of local socializing in the form of a community dance. This isn't a commercial cabaret like in Bunratty or Dublin, this is more like a community square dance in rural America. Let your hair down, and just enjoy the spirit. Folks will show you how to join in and dance the set patterns...or just sit and chat with those sitting this round!

Here are afew Old Irish Sayings:
'Seanfhocal'

Is minic a bhris béal duine a shrón.
A person's mouth often broke his nose.

Bíonn dhá insint ar scéal agus dhá leagan déag ar amhrán.
There are two sides to every story and twelve versions of a song.

Níl aon leigheas ar an grá ach pósadh.
The only cure for love, is marriage!

Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireas na daoine.
People survive in one another's shadow.

Photo of a Standing Stone, GlenColmCille. I hope you can see the designs carved on the stone. These stones are Pre-Christian and were used for wedding ceremonies in Pagan Ireland. (A sign of things to come!).This one stands in the centre of the glen, where a church was built beside it. Christian Ireland took over all the holy pagan sites, (and holidays). In the graveyard of this particular church, you can still see some Pre-Christian headstones with the Sun or Moon carved on them. Check the Glen travelogue for pictures.

The ruins of the forgotten island of InisCaora.
There are only afew of the larger islands which are still inhabited around the Donegal coast. You can take a day trip to any of the islands and discover the ghosts of the past, and ramble around what used to be homes to a hardy breed.
There is an trip to this particular island on the 5th Aug for everyone connected to the island.
