We met a family in the airport that are British but living in Oregon. It was a strange conversation until we figured out that they were British living in the US and we were American living in the UK. Both the flight and the train ride from Birmingham (pronounced Birminghm - unless you mean the one in Alabama) were relatively uneventful

Ryanair is cheap. But often it's not the only cheap option if you're flying to Dublin from Great Britain, so shop around.
For example, from Newcastle Airport (my local one), Aer Lingus offers flights at very similar prices to Ryanair, and they fly at much more convenient times.

I have flown into Dublin once on Ryanair (from London Standsted), and flown out twice to Edinburgh. I have found this to be one of the cheapest alternatives to flying in and out of places in the UK (and other parts of Europe as well).
While on the longer flights (going towards 3 hours) I have sometimes found Ryanair's seats to be a little uncomfortable, but on the shorter trips between the UK and Ireland I have found the journey to be very good.
On my flights the time for flying averaged on just over an hour, so you barely have time to drink your coke (coca-cola - which on Ryanair is not included in the price of the ticket, you have to pay for food and drink, or bring your own) before the captain tells you that they are coming in to land.
I have found the staff on Ryanair to always be polite, friendly and helpful. It is a good way to fly and especially good if you are looking for the cheaper alternative.

In 2004 I flew with BMI from London (Heathrow) to Dublin. It was not the cheapest airline to fly from London to Dublin, but it was a very nice airline to fly on. The trip over to Dublin is a very quick one. It felt like we took off, we were in the air for about 30 minutes and then we were coming in to land at Dublin.
The service on the flight was good, the seats were very comfortable as well. On BMI you are offered food and drinks (included in price of ticket). On the morning flight, like the one I went on, we were offered juice and panini (on the website it states that a traditional English breakfast is also offered, but I cannot recall if that was available on my flight or not).
Prices for flying with BMI are okay, it just depends on what time of day you are flying. Their earliest flights are usually their cheapest.
On their website you can match flights with finding a hotel or renting a car (or both).

Aer Arran do a lot of internal flights and sometimes if you do not want the hassle of getting a train and a bus and want to cut down on journey times they are sometimes worth using, especially if going from somewhere like Dublin to Donegal and vice versa!

Ryanair are a low cost Irish owned airline who fly from and into Dublin from many European destinations. You can get really cheap flights, depending when you book, that make it a lot more affordable to take a trip there. We got flights from Scotland for £28, including all taxes. Certainly can't moan at that!
To get from the airport into the city centre we took one of the airport buses. They leave from right outside the exit at the arrivals and there are a couple of different services [the ticket machines have a route list for each one] for about 9 Euro return.

Dublin Airport is 10km north of the city -get the 41bus from Eden Quay (about €1.30 fare) or get the blue Aircoach (special stops around the city centre) for €5.
Here's a pic of us in Dublin Airport before catching our flight to Prague. :-)
Taxis to and from Dublin airport to the city centre will cost you about €15-25, with a fee added for luggage & extra passengers.
There is no train or Luas connection to the Airport. :(

I'd heard about the value of Ryanair, but I never thought I'd benefit to directly. They are the reason that we went to Dublin from Ireland.
Yep, we found tickets from Glasgow, and returning to Edinburgh for only one pound/one euro each way. After mandatory taxes, each one way ticket cost about $30 US. What a deal!!

On the ground level there is a post office, currency exchange, and a Dublin tourism office. a transport desk with train and bus details. Left luggage is open daily from 6am to 11pm. The charges around around 4 Euro per item for 24 hours. For general enquiries call 01 814 1111

Dublin is served by a single terminal airport approximately 10km north of the city. Low cost airline Ryanair flies to Dublin from just about every regional airport in the UK as well as a handful on the European continent, while national flag carrier Aer Lingus flies to Dublin from a large number of European cities and a handful in North America.
A blue Aircoach express service connects to the city centre and many of Dublin's major hotels, most of which are on the south side of the city. Buses leave every 15 minutes and the journey time to the centre is approximately 30 minutes. The cost is 7 Euros for a single and 12 Euros return.
Dublin Bus offer an express AirLink service (routes 747 and 748) every 10 minutes at peak times to the city centre and bus station for 5 Euros. A one-day rambler ticket can also be purchased from the ticket machine or inside the airport (but not on the bus) that gives unlimited all day bus travel, also for 5 Euros. A pack of five one-day ramblers can be purchased for 17 Euros inside the airport.
