Check out www.ryanair.com for cheap flights to England and Europe. Be aware that most of the flights to Europe are in Airports far away from the city. Good way to travel if your on a budget..
Also www.freshAer.com is a new no frills low cost airline flying to major European destinations. As of yet the air line company plan to commence flights from the 1st October flying from Dublin to London, Manchester, Birmingham, and Malaga. You can't book on the internet yet, however the phone number is 1890 757 757

Let me speak for myself here: as you can see in the map, I had a flight from Amsterdam Schiphol to London Heathrow (always overcrowded with passengers and aircraft) and from London Heathrow to Dublin.
Because the several delays it took quite some time....
Taxis are easy and their prices reasonable, but of course always more expensive than public Transport but.....waiting at busstops in heavy downpours is no fun at all........
I too, rented a car to travel to Northern Ireland, which I had already rented here in The Natherlands at my Travel agency because that is cheaper.....You then get a voucher......to hand over the moment you pick up the car!
In Dublin and other smaller towns and villages: walking in your own feet is the best: my advice!!!

From the UK and continental Europe, try calling your local Aer Lingus or Ryanair office or surf to www.aerlingus.com or www.ryanair.com for cheapies! Especially from places as London, Brussels and Amsterdam fares are very low nowadays. Occasionally carriers such as BA and British Midland offer good fares as well. If you're coming over by car/boat, the best way to get to Dublin is to take the ferry from Holyhead in Wales. Beware of seasickness, it creeps up on you, feels like hell, and won't leave you until you touch the shore again.

We flew from Los Angeles nonstop to Dublin on Aer Lingus. It was a long 10 hour flight. Aer Lingus has some pretty good fares on their website. My only complaint was that the seats are way too small in coach, unless you are lucky enough to not have anybody next to you.
We rented a car from Hertz once we arrived at the airport. I do suggest that unless you have driven on the right side of the road before, and with the steering wheel on the right side, take the bus.Dublin is way too congested, and has alot of narrow streets. You can buy a ticket on the Dublin City Tour buses for only a few bucks, and ride all day. The tour takes you all over Dublin, and there is usually a bus every 10-15 minutes. Once you get outside of Dublin, driving is alot better.

From the States you don't have much choice other than to fly. One trip I flew Virgin Atlantic from Boston to London Gatwick and then hopped a Ryan Air flight to Dublin. I highly recommend Virgin - reasonably priced and a fun airline with lots of perks. Ryan Air is a pretty standard low-cost airline - nothing special but not too scary either. And who can esist an airline that flies the 'Love Plane'? (Check out the picture if you don't believe me...) On another trip I flew straight from Boston to Dublin on Aer Lingus - even though it's not as fun as Virgin, it's a very nice airline and the direct flight is the best!

From London we took a GO flight to Belfast and then rented a car to tour the country.
The flights from London to Belfast or Dublin (through GO or Ryannair) are extremely cheap, around 50 euros return.

You can get to Dublin by plane or by boat.
I took the plane.
From the airport you can take a bustransport taking you to O'Conell station where you can buy different kind of cards for transportation: Darts or train or busses or a combination of it.

Fly Air India to London.
During the high season it's the best deal. You can also pick up a cheap ticket from London to Dublin on RyanAir.
One thing though, Air India flies into Heathrow airport and Ryan Air flies out of wither Gatwick or Stanstead. You can take a shuttle for about $12 to get to the other airport.

If you're arriving from a continent like Asia, there is (sadly) no direct flights to Dublin. You have to fly in via London's Heathrow Airport. The pic I took below is of the British Midlands Business Class Lounge at Dublin Airport. Actually the BMI lounges look the same all over the world.
BMI has the most attractive rates on Business Class compared to Aer Lingus. My ticket costs slightly over EUR250 for a return flight (LHR-DUB-LHR) vs Aer Lingus biz class fare of EUR 490!
