General Post Office, Dublin

Favorite thing: While outside the post office, be sure to look closely at the building and its column supports, for it's there you can still see the evidence of the 1916 battles that destroyed this monument, marking this event as the birth date of Ireland's achievement of her independance from England.

I love the English, but I love Ireland too, and I'm glad for her independance. I'm sorry it took such violence and killing of two peoples I most admire on this planet, but all in all, Ireland deserves independance, and it's good that she gained it. Good on you, Ireland.

Favorite thing: The GPO plays an important role in modern Irish history. It's here where the IRA fortified themselves during the 1916 easter rising. The English then sailed a battleship up the river Liffey and peppered them from there.

If you look at the big O'Connel statue at the bottom of O'Connel street you can still see some bullet holes from that rising.

Anyway, the GPO is not neccessarily much of a tourist site but just remember the history when you go there to post your postcards. Remember to send me a postcard please:

Favorite thing: O'CONNELL STREET AND THE GENERAL POST OFFICE (or simply 'G.P.O.'), headquarters of THE RISING in 1916. The G.P.O. was built in the early nineteenth century in a Graeco-Roman style, complete with Ionic columns. O'Connell Street was named after Daniel O'Connell, 'The Liberator', whose monument may be found there.

Favorite thing: There is some great artwork along the walls depicting the battle that destryed the GPO. It's well worth the time looking through all of them.
