A "snug".. a snug is a small room off a lounge or bar in a pub, where you can drink with a little more privacy. You can't book them its first come first served. Most snugs have about 3 to 4 tables. Years ago in Dublin most women were not served in pubs or bars, in order to keep us in place snugs were built so we would not be seen. Indeed all that has changed us girls are allowed in now without being directed to the Snugs. However,it is nice to sit in one and have your own barman serve you without having to wait in a q.
An Lar... which you will see on some buses means city centre. It does not always mean the bus in heading in that direction...
In some pubs you might see the following signs for toilets or rest rooms.: Mna or Fir
Mna means Women and Fir is for Men.. I know it confusing... but thats the Irish for you..
Garda Siochana
This is our unarmed police force. Translated it means Guardian of the Peace.
Gaeltacht
An Irish speaking area in the country.
Oireachtas
Means the Irish Parliament.
Teachta Dala (TD's)
Elected representatives of Dail Eireann, the lower house of the Republic of Ireland Parliament. Know as TD's,
Favorite thing: I got this picture as part of an email attachment during the week....Sorry for the bad language, but it made me smile...and besides, you know from reading my Dublin page that there is more to Dublin than drinking, right? :-)

Yes, you will hear the Irish talk about crack all the time. Or so you think!
In fact, they talk about something that is spelled as craic.
Craic has nothing to do with the drug of the same pronunciation. It is an Irish word that hasn't a straightforward translation. It is a feeling, it describes an atmosphere.
Craic is about having a good time (in a pub, with friends, ...), about enjoying yourself, about having fun.
So after a party, one might say, "It was good craic!".
The expression "What's the craic?" is often used instead of "What's up?", "What's the latest?", "What's going on?"
