James Joyce mentioned Davy Byrnes pub in several occasions, both in Dubliners and Ulysses. In Ulysses in particular, Bloom eats here, as the following quote tells you.
"Mr Bloom ate his stripes of sandwich, fresh clean bread, with relish of disgust, pungent mustard, the feety savour of green cheese. Sips of his wine soothed his palate. Not logwood that. Tastes fuller this weather with the chill off. Nice quiet bar. Nice piece of wood in that counter. Nicely planed. Like the way it curves."
This pub has been around since 1889 and Mr Davy Byrnes, well.. he was friendly and abstemious. Right now it's supposed to be a cosy place where people from all walks of lilfe congregate to eat and drink. It is often packed, so it's better to come early or make a reservation (I don't know if it's possible, tough).
Favorite Dish: The seafood platter and apple tart and wonderful! All the sandwiches and the soupsare great, too... and huge. Oysters are really cheap and served with delicious brown bread and butter. The irish stew, however, is less than memorable.

The service was great here. They were very accomodating to people with disabilities and special food needs. Of the menu items I tried, all were great (vegetable soup, oysters, prawns in filo, bailey's cheesecake, brown bread). This place has wheelchair access without wheelchair accessible toilets. Highly recommend stopping by Davy Byrnes on trip to Dublin.
Favorite Dish: Prawns in Filo dough.

we read about this place in a tourist guide, tried it out and were quite impressed.
We had to ask for a menu, one of us got a daytime menu, the other an evening menu. It was interesting to see that the selection of dishes were almost the same, but the prices were cheaper during the daytime!
