Kilmainham Jail: Kilmainham Gaol
Kilmainham Gaol was in use between 1796 and 1924 and you get a great feeling for Irish history in that place. It has seen a long row of Irish rebels coming through its gates (and into its cells), starting with the United Irishmen of 1796 up to the rebels of the Easter Rising of 1916 and the Civil War, with the future Irish president Eamon de Valera being the last prisoner to leave Kilmainham in 1924. One of the most gruesome points in its history must have been when 14 leaders of the Easter Rising were executed in Stonebreaker’s Yard in May 1916. One of them, James Connolly, had been so badly wounded during the rising that he was not able to stand and was therefore shot while tied to a chair. These executions caused in shift in public attitude towards the rising. While a large part of the Irish people did not support the rising originally, this act of brutality by the British Army made many people change their minds and gave new impetus to the Irish wish for freedom, leading to the War of Independence from 1919 – 1921.

A visit to Kilmainham starts with an interesting exhibition about the history of the jail, capital punishment and about the Irish rebellions whose participants filled Kilmainham's cells. A very good and informative guided tour will then take you to the main hall where parts of the film “In the Name of the Father” were shot. From there it goes on to the chapel where Joseph Plunkett married Grace Gifford just hours before his execution. You will also see Stonebreaker’s Yard, and a rather dark, damp and draughty prison tract. So don’t dress too lightly when you visit Kilmainham.

Kilmainham Jail: piece of irish history
Kilmainham Jail or gaol is the place, where the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising were executed-and where Joseph Plunkett married Grace Gifford in a secret ceremony only hours before he was executed.
The guided tour was very interesting and the guide defenitely knew what he was talking about, so if you're interested in irish history- must-see!!!

    Kilmainham Jail: The Jail
Kilmainhamjail was like trying to find a needle in a haystack for me, and I never found it. I regret having left it til late to go there during my visit. It' supposed to be a good tour. I'd suggest finding out exactly how to get there via public transportation or have someone take you there. I tried driving there, and I think I was in the area, but I never found an entrance or a sign for it.

Kilmainham Jail: If you see one thing in Dublin . . .
One of the largest unoccupied gaols in Europe, covering some of the most heroic and tragic events in Ireland's emergence as a modern nation from 1780s to the 1920s.
It has now been converted into a tourist attraction that includes a major exhibition detailing the political and penal history of the prison and its restoration. The tour of the prison includes an audio-visual show.

The guided tour here was well worth it and the guide provided very pertinent information about the jail and how it ties in with Ireland's history and fight for independence.

At the time of my visit there was also an art exhibition utlisiing the cells surrounding the main courtyard.

Kilmainham Jail: Saved him from execution!
The cross in the image above shows the spot where James Connolly who was tied to a chair to keep him upright was executed after the 1916 Easter Rising when fifteen of the leaders were executed by firing squad in the stone-breaker’s yard, among them Patrick Pearse and his brother William, James Connolly, Thomas Clarke and Joseph Plunkett.

Plunkett had married his sweet-heart Grace Gifford in the prison chapel the night before his execution, the couple being allowed just a few minutes together before their final separation.

At the same time a frantic search for Eamon de Valera's American birth certificate saved him from execution by a government unwilling to upset its potential US ally in World War I. If de Valera had retained the Irish form of his name, Edward Coll, he would have joined his fellow revolutionaries among Ireland's martyred patriots and the subsequent course of Irish history would have been very different.

When it came to political prisoners, the authorities learned too late that many were more dangerous when in prison than when free and, in the case of the 1916 leaders, more dangerous dead than when alive. The Rebellion ushered in the most traumatic and final period in the prison’s history with the conflict of 1919-21 that brought about independence and the subsequent civil war during which a policy of official executions as reprisals embittered and divided Ireland for many years after.

    Kilmainham Jail: Kilmainham Gaol
This is an old jail opened in 1796 and closed in 1924. It was the site where many famous revolutionaries were held, and some executed. It was opened over the span of 6 major revolutions. The cost to get in was 5.30 Euros for adults and 2.10 Euros for students, which includes entrance to the museum and a guided tour of the jail, which lasts about 1 hour. The guided tour was actually really well done. The first part of it is a visual slide show where the tour guide explains a brief history of the jail and revolutions which increased its population. The gude was really great and gave just the right amount of information without boring you. You saw cells of famous political prisoners and sites of executions, including memorial plaque and paintings. The museum ther is quite interesting too. I would recommend going through the museum after the tour as many of the items there have significance to the stories you will hear on the tour and will mean a lot more to you after it. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone, young and old.
