Rotunda Hospital was founded In 1745 by a surgeon Bartholomew Mosse as a maternity training hospital, the first of its kind. Officially was named the Dublin Lying-in Hospital. Twelve years after it moved to a different location where it became "The New Lying-In Hospital" and now simply "The Rotunda" .
The Rotunda Hospital was the first maternity hospital in Britain or Ireland and was at one time the largest in the world. It is therefore unique as an institution because it has continued to provide an unbroken record of service to women and babies since its foundation occuping the same building more than 250 years.
