  • Parts of Trinity College are quite old, it was founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I, but it's only in the last 20 or 30 years that Catholics have been allowed to attend. The campus is quite beautiful but the main reason people visit is to see the Old Library (1792) and the Book of Kells and other old monastic manuscripts. The old library started off as a single floor but the roof was raised when the library filled up and the second floor of the library is elegant, with filtered light and stacks of old books and ladders and sculpted busts representing authors and philosophers lining both sides. You can go to see this library but they request that you stay silent and no photos are allowed.

The Book of Kells is larger than i expected but the detail and the brilliant colours that were all hand scripted by monks are truly great works of art. There is an exhibition in the library on how illustrated manuscripts were created, right down to how they were bound.

  • Our historical walking tour started at the front gate of Trinity College. I thought Trinity College had many beautiful buildings and landscaping, making it a pleasant place to walk around. Our guide was very informative about the history of Trinity, making it a wonderful experience. I would definently recommend taking a guided tour of the college, you'll learn a great deal. It was one of the highlights of my trip!

Trinity College: The Book of Kells Exhibition-Do Not Miss This!
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the best exhibitions I have seen anywhere in the world! The Book of Kells is a 9th Century manuscript of the Gospels, renowned world-wide for its rich and varied illustrations. It is on display in the Old Library in Trinity College. The current exhibition in the Colonnades, 'The Book of Kells. Picturing the Word' places this national treasure in its historical and cultural context. The Old Library is open 7 days a week. Admission from 9.30- 17.00 Monday to Saturday,9.30 to 16.30 on Sunday (June-September) and 12.30-16.30 on Sundays (October-May). There is a charge for admission, however, it is well worth it. The book is in near perfect condition, which is amazing given its age. The text is incredibley ornate.

    Trinity College: Trinity College
  • Tip Rating:
  • Very old and very quiet. I felt like I was in a church when I was walking around on this campus. Most people come here to look at the Book of Kels, which is a perfectly good reason for coming here. Still, it’s an interesting place in that even without the Book it still has a lot of history to it. Worth a couple hours of your time.

Trinity College: Another Tip on Trinity College! Sorry, no photos
  • Tip Rating:
  • Yes, another tip on Trinity College! But after reading someone's tip who said it was boring, I have to put my opinions in here. Ok, first, I wasn't planning on going on the tour, but was glad I did. I avoided the long line to see the Book of Kells & the museum around it. Seeing the Book of Kells, itself, was a little disappointing. Why?They only show a few pages at a time. I admit, I am not a Book of Kells fan, so far. Maybe I am just ignorant, right?! Forgive me, please. And read on, if you will....

Our guide was a very charming, funny philosophy professor ( and I like to remember him as very attractive, in my fantasies!), who gave an informative talk. Since I had only been in Ireland about one hour at that point, I didn't have much to compare him with though!! Yes, I was easily impressed. But I haven't told you about the library yet -- this was the oldest library I could imagine being in! The books lined shelves that went up so high. They were bound in thick leather and looked three hundred years old, to me. It was a beautiful room, too. But I am a sucker for a beautiful library and I am proud to admit that.

another day - I visited an art gallery/small art museum just inside an entrance to the campus ( but not the main entrance). Very modern art that I really enjoyed. That visit was close to two years ago...

    Trinity College: Trinity College
  • Tip Rating:
  • The university features beautiful architecture, and on the university grounds you will find the excellent permanent exhibition about the "Book of Kells" and the art of book illustration which the Irish preserved in the Dark Ages. It is a well known attraction and a must-see. Also worthwile seeing: The "Long Room" (where you can find even more beautiful books displayed).
