The weather is unpredictable - it can rain at any time of the day at any time of the year. Always leave your car in a car park if visiting the city centre. O' Connell street is a dangerous area. Watch your belongings anywhere in Dublin.
Street voilence has risen greatly over the last 2 years. Areas such as O'Connell Street have become no- go areas at night. Taxi ranks are hot spots for arguements which turn into fights and sadly casualties. Four young men have been killed during the year 2000 so far.
See Tourist Traps above - though I should add that Dublin has a drug problem (and I don't mean the beer!) and a growing gap between the 'haves' and the 'have nots' - all living in close proximity. You can guess the problems that therefore arise - as in any big city. Always be careful! AND DO NOT CAMP IN THE PHOENIX PARK !!!!
The one and only time someone stole a bag from me or one of my travel partners was in Dublin. North of Liffey in Talbot Street. But we were 18 years old and stupid, you will be fine if you keep your eyes open and avoid dodgy areas not even busdrivers go to!!!
Just remember to adhere to the usual safety precautions. Some parts of Dublin can be pretty dangerous by nightfall. So, be careful.
Photo below: Molly Malone. No, no, no. Not the one seated! She's the statue pulling that cart.
The main thing to keep in mind is pickpockets. They are everywhere in Dublin - especially around the touristy areas. Never put your bags on the ground and do not carry all of your valuables in one bag.
Apparently the trams (Luas) in Dublin are pretty quiet. See photos for info. Although most accidents involving the tram are to do with idiots parking their cars on the tracks.
The day we arrived, the EU was there, so although mugging is very popular as we were told in this city, I felt perfectly safe with the many Gardai.
