The nearest airport to Howth is Dublin. I usually fly here from East Midlands airport with Ryanair.
The flight times are pretty good, and I have visited just for the day. My flight departed at 06.30 (arriving in Dublin just before 07.30), and returned 20.55, so plenty of time to visit Sutton, Howth then Dublin before flying home.
This cost me £16 for a return flight, including taxes etc.
I'd certainly consider doing this as a day trip again - Although I'd love to spend a few nights in Howth too.
Dublin airport is about a 30 minute ride into the city depending on traffic flow ( allow plenty of time for your return journey to the airport, particularly during rush hour and when there are sporting events/ festivals etc). If you get to the airport with plenty of time to spare, there's a lot to keep you occupied. I was surprised at the size of the airport, and its many shops - it was like being in a shopping mall!
Taxis, The Dublin Bus companies airport service or the local bus service can be found outside the Arrivals exit. (The local bus station is just across the pedestrian crossing)
I caught the number 747 Dublin Bus from the airport. You purchase your ticket from one of the machines at the bus stop before boarding. There was a very helpful employee from the bus company, who asked each passenger about their travel plans, and advised them of the best ticket to buy. I was advised to buy a 1 day Rambler ticket for 6 euros, that gave unlimited use on the buses including Howth, and my return to the airport!
The bus stops at O'Connell Street ( in the centre of Dublin) and the Busaras (Central bus station) which is where I alighted. CLICK HERE for Dublin Bus Company info including ticket types and prices.
Outside the bus station is the Dublin Bus stop for Howth. (Buses operating from inside the bus station belong to the Bus Eirreann company).
The bus station is located opposite the Custom House, and is about halfway between the DART stations of Connolly and Tara Street, where you can catch the train to Howth.

The easiest way of getting to Howth is by using the DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transport), you can also get there by either road or even by boat.

You can get the No. 31 bus from Abbey st in Dublin that takes you all the way to Howth and Howth Head, as an alternative to the DART. Unlike the DART, the 31 bus will take you through the village and up to the Head, if you can't handle the uphill walk.

Howth has it's own suburban rail station (DART). It's the northern terminus for the DART.
Howth to the city centre via DART is about 30-40 mins.
Please see my Dublin city transport tips for more information about the DART.

I jumped on the DART and rode it to Sutton Station (two stops from Howth) where Peter picked me up and drove me the rest of the way.
From Dublin (the station is City Centre, or Connoly Station) to Howth cost 1.70 Euro one way or you can purchase a one day ticket for 3 Euro. It takes about 25 minutes.

The fare from Howth to Malahide is also 1.70 Euro. Once you arrive at the DART station in Malahide it's only a few minutes walk to Malahide Castle.
There's also a beautiful church right next to the station if you're interested in exploring it while you wait for the train.

This picture is actually in Dublin at the Bus Station just behind the Custom House North of the River Liffey. Bus Eireann is actually a long distance bus service, so you wouldn't take it to get to Howth or Malahide. Instead, you'd get on the Dublin Bus. You're looking for route 31 from Lower Abbey Street in Dublin. To Malahide, look for the 42 bus from Beresford Place in Dublin.
By the way, you have to have the exact fare for the bus in coins, not notes. The fares break down like this:
.80 euro for 1-3 stages
1.20 for 4-7
1.40 for 8-13
1.60 for 14-23
1.70 for over 23
2 euro for outside the city zone.
Don't worry, just have some change and the bus driver will help you. The bus drivers are really nice in Dublin!!
