If you can 'bag' one of the compartment things that sit about six to eight people then you are in for a good night.
It probably has the best kept Guinness in Galway and there are often traditional Irish music sessions on - some impromptu. and not aimed at tourists.
Don't bother to eat here - but do get involved, it is good place to talk about everything and anything with anybody.

This was the first pub I went to in Galway City, and despite being a tourist magnet, it was also a pretty lively bar. There is a small stage for trad bands in the rear of the pub, but most of the activity is at the bar itself, where tourists (and a few locals) can gather and talk travel. When in Galway, go to Taffe's. It's a pub downtown with the craick (sp?) on certain nights and it's a blast. The night we were there, an arm of Hurricane Gordon had swept across both Ireland and the UK. We weren't going to do anything but we got an offer for a ride downtown (I hope to write about that part in the future) from our B&B in lower Salthill and the guy's son recommended this place. It was great! I had been disappointed up until that point with Ireland in that all the tourist shows and reviews recommend catching the music but when you get to that town it's typically a case of "oh, that's not until such and such day, are you going to be here then?" Turned out Galway was big enough that we caught a night that actually had live music. Ask a local for directions to the place, its downtown and we caught the ride in and a cab back, so I have no idea where the hell it was! The night we were there, it was a 3 man band with the typical songs, some rebel, some ballad, etc. I think the band was a son, a father, and a grandfather playing guitar, fiddle, and accordion in that order. They were excellent. I don't remember there being a cover charge. (?) Theres also another place right across the street with a similar scene that we didn't go in. I can't remember the name of that place. Both of them were packed to the gunnels. Rightfully so, darn good time! Definitely satisfied the need for hearing all the good ones you learn in the US over in Ireland. Theme: Live Music

Came across a brilliant session here on Thursday (18/1/2007), eleven or so musicians,
great acoustics and ambience. Fast reels and jigs, but also ballads, slow airs, even some
blues thrown in. Recommended listening! Apparently its on every Thursday, 9.30.
