Inishmore Off The Beaten Path

When we arrived, our battle plan was to make a big distance between us and the rest of the tourist (as if we can forget that we are tourists ourselves). So we decided to ride towards the most western point to have our picnic lunch. We found there absolute peace, the shout of the seagulls was accompanied by the burning rays of the sun.

We sat down next to the small jetty, eat our sandwich and saw 2 other people who had the same idea as us. You have a good view on Brannock Island and you can see the lighthouse on Rock Island.

But here you can see the difference in landscape from Inishmore, the meadows at this side are almost all rocks with here and there green grass and all is walled in. You see the landscape change before your eyes driving towards this place.

When you ride or walk in the direction of Dùn Aengus you will see after an half hour a small white sand beach. It was a beautiful sunny day and that brought many people to this lovely beach to swim or to sunbath. But there we were only hear for one day and didn’t bring our swimsuit we just watched them for a moment and then we rode further to the west.

If you have time, chill out on this beach.

The cliffs near the cashel of Dun Aengus and Dun Dubhchathair (black fort) are between 80 and 90 metres high. You see a lot of people looking into the dept of the ocean. I have a fear of heights, but at the black fort I managed to get down on my belly and looked over the edge.

Be careful when you do this and make sure that this is not an overhanging cliff that can give way beneath you.

After some rainy days you will easily find washing lines allover the island, maybe hidden behind a thick stone wall, in case the high winds would take the clothes away to the continent!
