1 Review  Basically, you can't smoke in any 'workplace'. So that includes pubs, cafes and restaurants. Some pubs have set up smoking areas outside, and you can smoke at cafe tables on the pavement. I liked the...

Gather the eggs

by rexvaughan

In Inishmore I was somewhat surprised to see this flock of chickens in a front yard, oblivious to the passers by like me. It seems everyone who travels wants "to experience the local culture." Well here it is on the island - people still raise chickens, probably both for the eggs and for meat. These are almost too pretty to eat.

Gaelic Language

by Krumel

Galway still has some areas in which Irish is the main language, the so-called Gaeltachts. This may cause some confusion for tourists as many of the road signs in Connemara are only in Irish. When the English invaded Ireland they often just took the Irish pronounciation and put an English spelling on to it. "Ros an Mhil", for example, became Rossaveal. So it might help if you just read a name out loud and look for a similar sounding place on your map. That does not work for all the places, though. Some placenames were actually translated from Irish into English.

Galway is very busy during the summer with lots of festivals going on, as there are: The Arts Festival, the Galway Races, the Film Fleadh, the Oyster Festival in Clarinbridge and the Ballinasloe Horse Fair. Galway will be buzzing for any of the events, and you should be booking your accommodation well in advance if you intend to visit one the festivals.

ARAN ISLANDSThe forts on Aran have been here for hundreds of years. They are great prehistoric sights and you wouldn't want to destroy them. Please don't climb onto the walls of the forts. Remember that they are old and real and not made out of concrete. This is no adventure playground!
