McDonough's Fish and Chips: Disappointed

by kharrima

I was disappointed when I had heard so many good things about this restaurant. I didn't care of the batter used for the fish, and parts of it was still soggy. You had to pay 80 cents for a very small container of tarter sauce and 60 cents for 1 packet of ketchup. It was certainly nothing special.

The "Quiet man" -pub: The most popular pub of Ireland is just a grocery

by globetrott

One of the most popular pubs of all Ireland is certainly this one - although it never had been a real pub, but a simple grocery store. But in the movie 'The Quiet Man' it was used as John Wayne's pub, and a lot of tourists would like to see the 'famous pub' and they are quite disappointed not to be able to take a drink at the place, where John Wayne had to fight against his brother in law... It is a grocery, so you may buy also packed food and drinks there and you will also find a big selection of black&white pics of the movie !

Moran's Oyster Cottage: The world is your oyster at Moran's Oyster Cottage

by nynaeve1723

Moran's Oyster Cottage on the Weir in Kilcolgan, Co. Galway is one of the best restaurants in which I've ever eaten. In fact, my husband and I plan our itineraries to Ireland to ensure the inclusion of a dinner here! The ambience and service are not of the absolute highest standard (4 stars out of 5)but the food and the value more than make up for it.Moran's is family owned and has been in operation for more than 250 years. The oysters come from the area directly in front of the restaurant and are, therefore, as fresh as can be. The menu also includes other seafood, such as smoked salmon, prawns and crab.If you like seafood, don't miss Moran's! We really should branch out, but we can't bring ourselves to when we order here. My husband and I always start with a plate of the garlic grilled oysters to share as an appetizer. We then have the sampler plate, which includes generous portions...

Mitchells, Clifden, Co. Galway: Kids not made feel welcome

by IrishAtHome

The restaurant has a nice ambience but on the day we were there the staff were as wooden as the furniture. My wife, my 4yr old ,my 2 yr old and myself came for lunch. What struck us first was the prices on the childrens menu. The items were listed much the same as the items on the regular lunch menu but about €1.50 dearer than the adult option!!!! Average price for a kids portion burger and fries €11.50 ($14). We asked could we get a plain ccorned beef sandwich for the 4yrold, this arrived at a cost of €6.95 ($8.60). My wife had the burger and fries, I had fish and chips, 3 cokes....Total €35 ($45).Tip ...dont go back!!! Food was mediocre, staf were dreadful. Our feelings on leaving this restaurnat were mixed. We wondered is there an unwritten policy that kids are not welcome in this particular restaurant?, Is Ireland the most expensive country in the world to travel in? Am I turning...

Java's: Late night coffee

by sue_stone

Java's is a small cafe that is very popular for a late night coffee/snack.It is a great meeting place after the bars/clubs close and is open till 4am most nights. We had a quick coffee here and enjoyed the music and atmosphere.

McDonagh's: Galways Best Chipper??!

by sue_stone

We had heard so many good reviews about "Galways Best Chipper" McDonaghs, that we thought we had better see what the fuss was about. We ordered the mandatory serves of fish and chips, and settled down at the communal tables to wait in anticipation. We were sorely dissapointed........the fish was overcooked and it looked and tasted like the oil was long overdue for a change. It left an unpleasant taste in our mouths......and we were forced to wander up the hill to the Golden Arches for a caramel sundae!!

Elles Cafe: Quick coffee and a snack

by sue_stone

If you need a quick caffeine or sugar hit whilst shopping in Galway, why not pop into Elles Cafe.Although we did not see the Super Model there, we did have a nice coffee and a tasty little treat. We were then able to soldier on till happy hour time!!

The Tearoom at Kylemore Abbey: Abbey lunch

by sue_stone

The Tearoom at Kylemore Abbey puts on a great lunch. It is a cafeteria style set up, when you move along with your tray and select what you would like to eat. Hot dishes included a yum serve of irish stew.Good value for the location.Pretty busy too - all the tours seemed to eat here.

GBC: Galway Bakery Company

by chrissyalex

This eatery has a cafeteria on the ground floor and a slightly more expensive restaurant on the first floor. They offer a nice variety on their menu and fresh baked goods. It is not the fanciest place, but great for a good quick meal. Brown bread mixture of seafood and vegetables in a puff pastry
