    Dunguaire Castle
    by sue_stone
Built in 1520, Dunguaire Castle is in excellent condition after being restored.

It is located in a prime position looking over Galway Bay.

You can climb to the top of the castle for view over the bay, and as the rooms are restored you can get a feel for castle life.

They hold medieval banquets here during the warmer months of the year.

    Galway Quay Street
    by sue_stone
Galway is quiet a pretty town, with an old area with paved streets and plenty of bars and restaurants.

We had a wander around the streets - Quay Street/High Street/Shop Street and did some window shopping.

Then spent some time soaking up the Irish culture - drinking and eating too much!

    Kylemore Abbey
    by sue_stone
Kylemore Abbey is a castle-like neo-gothic mansion that is built on the banks of a lake with a mountain in the background.

It is in a spectacular location and is well worth a photography frenzy.

You can do a tour of some sections of the Abbey, or just admire it from afar, as we did.

An exclusive boarding school is run from the Abbey these days, and there is is also a big craft shop and tearoom/cafeteria.

    River Corrib
    by sue_stone
The River Corrib runs through the middle of Galway, and empties into Galway Bay.

You can take a walk along the river and hopefully soak up some sun with the locals.

It is nothing that pretty, but worth a look if you get the time out from drinking/eating!

Roundstone is one of the most beautiful villages of the Connemara, because you have a great scenery of mountains, lakes and bays from there. I have been in Roundstone several times and it became quite full of tourists recently, also because of a movie that was made there :
The Matchmaker - that movie was filmed in Roundstone in 1997
Matchmaking is still quite usual in Ireland and there are traditional festivals, where people of all ages meet in order to find a partner.

    by globetrott
Dun Aengus on the Aran island of Inishmore dates back to the iron- or bronze-age and it was built directely on the cliffs with a high wall on the side seen on my picture, and at the side of the cliffs it is totally open, but of course it was portected that way by the cliffs, falling down there about 100 meters deep.
When you click on my picture you may see the entrance to Dun Aengus - the entry is free !

    Croagh Patrick
    by Cruefan
It was on the summit of the mountain that Saint Patrick fasted for forty days in 441 AD and the custom has been faithfully handed down from generation to generation. It is also said that St. Patrick herded all the snakes in Ireland here as well.

Croagh Patrick is 762 Meters above sea level and there is a path that goes to the summit. If you chose to walk up there is a statue to St. Patrick himself on the summit. I was told by a local that it takes about 2.5 hour to climb up.

Again this moutain is in County Mayo but you have to go through the Connemara so I included it in.

    Connemara National Park
    by globetrott
Connemara National Park is a big area east of Clifden and south of Leenane and it includes 4 of the 12 bens - umong them is Benbaun, which is the highest of them with 730 meters. Inside that National Park you may also see plenty of megalith graves, dating back more than 4000 years.
You may walk through the national Park all year long, but the Visitor centre is only open during summer, daily between May and September.

Oughterard is a small village in the north-west of Galway city and from Oughterard you will have a perfect view on Lough Corrib and the Partry Mountains. It is at the east end of the Connemara and you may still find many muddy meadows, where peat is won by the local people, who take away the soil by a special showel and make big heaps to dry it in the sun and wind...

  • Directions: You may get to Oughterard, when you take the road N59 from Galway City. The distance will be about 40 km on a rather small road !
