Dun Aengus on Inishmore

by globetrott

Dun Aengus on the Aran island of Inishmore dates back to the iron- or bronze-age and it was built directely on the cliffs with a high wall on the side seen on my picture, and at the side of the cliffs it is totally open, but of course it was portected that way by the cliffs, falling down there about 100 meters deep. When you click on my picture you may see the entrance to Dun Aengus - the entry is free !

Oughterard - north-west of Galway city

by globetrott

Oughterard is a small village in the north-west of Galway city and from Oughterard you will have a perfect view on Lough Corrib and the Partry Mountains. It is at the east end of the Connemara and you may still find many muddy meadows, where peat is won by the local people, who take away the soil by a special showel and make big heaps to dry it in the sun and wind...

Roundstone - & the movie "The matchmaker"

by globetrott

Roundstone is one of the most beautiful villages of the Connemara, because you have a great scenery of mountains, lakes and bays from there. I have been in Roundstone several times and it became quite full of tourists recently, also because of a movie that was made there :The Matchmaker - that movie was filmed in Roundstone in 1997Matchmaking is still quite usual in Ireland and there are traditional festivals, where people of all ages meet in order to find a partner.

Arran Islands - south-west of Galway City

by globetrott

The Arran Islands are about 20 km off the mainland and the landscape is quite the same as in the Burren - with that special stony ground and plenty of flowers coming out of holes and small gorges between and inside the rocks....And the most important sight of the main Island of the Arrans is "Dun Angus" an old fort, built at the edge of the cliffs. Unfortunately you cannot realize on my picture, that these cliffs are about 60 meters high

Visit the Royal Tara China Factory

by 807Wheaton

It's too bad I don't have a picture of the building that we toured and the showrooom they have open. Tara Hall, home of Royal Tara China is situated on what was formerly the family seat of the Joyce's - one of the ancident 14 tribes of Galway. When taking the tours you will witness creation of timeless heirlooms at the finger tips of local craftspeople. The guided factory tours are free and are given M - F every hour, starting at 9:30.The Showrooms are open 7 days at week. There is also a coffee shop and tearoom here for a nice little lunch or snack. The showrooms and tearoom are really quite elegant.

AfternoonTea and a Tour at Rathbaun Farm

by 807Wheaton

The Connolley family offers an afternoon tea when the tour of the farm is completed. The tea is served in their delightful home.We had hot tea, scones with clotted cream and jams. There was a small peat fire going to warm the room which was a bit chilly. We enjoyed the plates that decorated the walls and cupboards of the room. It reminded me of my home!
