Kylemore Abbey

by sue_stone

Kylemore Abbey is a castle-like neo-gothic mansion that is built on the banks of a lake with a mountain in the background. It is in a spectacular location and is well worth a photography frenzy. You can do a tour of some sections of the Abbey, or just admire it from afar, as we did. An exclusive boarding school is run from the Abbey these days, and there is is also a big craft shop and tearoom/cafeteria.

Kylemore Abbey

by Alain_Smeets

The name Kylemore comes from 'Coill Mor' meaning "Big Wood".Michael Henry started building Kylemore house in 1864 and the cornerstone was laid in 1867.In 1920 it was sold again to the Irish Benedictine Nuns. They needed a new abbey since their abbey in Ypres was bombed durning the first Worl War and they walk from Ypres to Calais to escapte to England.Since 1920 they are running Kylemore Abbey and they run also a girl school in these buildings. You can visit the abbey, the gardens and a neo-gothic church.

The landscape around you

by Alain_Smeets

When you drive from Clifden towards the Connemara National park, you see some nice coastline and take your time and stop now and then to admire the views. Get in the same pace as Ireland is, slow and easy and breath that fresh air and look around you, don’t rush through the landscape.

DUNGUAIRE CASTLE.....

by eden_teuling

DUNGUAIRE Castle was once a stronghold of the Kings of Connaught. In keeping with its noble entertainments, today the castle plays host to superb medaeival banquets: see RESTAUTANT TIPS.......This Castle has, for hundreds of years, stood proudly on the site of the 7th Century STRONGHOLD of Guaire, the King of Connaught, its majesty dominating the shore of GALWAY BAY.The CASTLE bridges 13 Centuries of Irish history, from the skermishes, battles and sieges that characterise its colourful (!) past, through to the literary revival of the realy 20th Century. In 1924, Oliver St. John Gogarty, surgeon, peot, author and wit, a contemporary & friend of W.B. Yeats and Lady Gregory, acquired this CASTLE as a place of quiet retreat.Today the restored Castle gives an insight into the lifestyle of the people who lived there from 1520 to modern times. The Castle is some 27 km. (17 miles) from Galway City...

RINGS FROM CLADDAGH.....

by eden_teuling

CLADDAGH once was a fishermen's community outside the old city walls of Galway.Nowadays it is a suburb of Galway but this community has something special. The old cottages have been replaced by modern housing but there is a museum with old objects and lots of photos to get to know how people lived there, long ago. The Museum is situated at the harbour in the SPANISH ARCH built of natural stone. THE CLADDAGH RING in gold or silver. Precious rings that went /go? from mother to daughter.Imagine: a heart with on both sides a hand that hold it; on top is a crown. When someone wears the ring with the crown towards the top of her finger, it means that she has already given her heart away..isn't free anymore.....is the crown directed to her wrist it means that men still have a chance to win her heart!!They still sell these rings so.......

ENCHANTING CONNEMARA

by eden_teuling

This region is really SPECTACULAR also because the weatherconditions can change so suddenly........It also is still unspoilt ......Connemara is dominated by the TWELVE BENS (or PINS) mountain range and the MAAMTURK MOUNTAINS .I love this rugged landscape in the west of Ireland very much! Here you see the peaks of these mountains and isn't it a striking view?? and a place not to be missed????

RESTORATION

by eden_teuling

Inside the "little cathedral" wonderful shiny marble in pink and green, my favourite colours, are a real pleasure to the eye!A cathedral in miniature tthe Church is a perfect example of the Gothic Style, its interior adorned with a variety of IRISH MARBLE columns, beautiful stained-glass windows and skillfully designed ceiling. It is worthwhile to visit this fairy-tale like castle and cathedral-in-miniature......But...remember that we cannot see the classrooms and the girls working very hard to pass their exams.....perhaps some may be homesick, who knows.....I could leave the building and go for a stroll along the lake and through the Gardens.....
