Look for Fungi the Dolphin
It's not the real Fungi the Dolphin - Dingle

Fungi the Dolphin started to appear around Dingle Harbour around 1984 where he has been ever since.

There are boat trips out into the harbour every day to see Fungi and I believe you swim in the harbour too - there are places to hire a wetsuit.

I have to say that Fungi was conspicuous by his absence on our trip to Dingle and consequently the sculpture on the harbour side was as close to Fungi as we would be getting.

An amazing road that cuts through the Brandon mountain range at around 600m high.

Caution! wide jeeps or trucks cannot use the road as it is quite narrow!

    Sleahead
Countryside around sleahead, well worth a stop and a swim on their beach if it is warm enough.

    CONNOR PASS !!! SCARY!!
I hope you are driving a very compact car if you try and drive over this pass. This is the smallest road I have every been on. No way 2 small cars can get by each other in some spots, and its a long way down.

    Coumineole Beach at Dunquin
If you follow the Slea Head leisure drive (R559) from Dingle you will come across Dunquin en route.

Coumineole beach was used as the scene for the landing of the guns in Ryans Daughter. At the top of the hill there is a stone monument commemorating the fiming there (picture in my travelogue).

It is breathtaking. There's a car park at the top of the cliffs and then you can descend on foot down quite a rough path and/or steep windy road down onto the sand.

The Dingle Peninsula Website gives more information on the area and local B&B's etc.

Another beach used in the film is Inch Beach which was used in the final scene. See my tip.

Ceathru, the Schoolhouse near Dunquin village was used in the mob scene in the film.

    Blasket Islands
The Blasket Islands are a series of 7 rocky islands just offshore. The largest is shaped like a dead man laying in the water. During the summer, you can take a 2-3 hour boat trip around the islands to veiw the wildlife on land and in the sea, as long as the sea is not too rough. The largest was inhabited until the 1950's.

    Slea Head Leisure Drive
The Slea Head Leisure Drive takes in a lot of interesting places to visit along the way.

It is located at the very end of the Dingle Peninsula.

I have a couple of seperate tips on this area (see tips on Beehive Huts, the beach at Dunquin) but also along the way are several things I never got to see.

The Famine Cottage for example at Ventry and the Blasket Islands to name but two.

There is big shop and tea shop at Slea Head which we did stop at and sat outside overlooking the cliffs and the sea while we had a nice drink.

This website gives a good description of a trip around the whole Dingle Peninsula which we did although not in the order they're describing.
