Five kms from Sneem is Staigue Fort, probably built in the 1st century AD but possibly up to 400AD.
Used by a clan chieftan, it only has two small chambers entrenched within the thick walls although there were certainly either huts or tents in the centre. Astonishing construction this, as there is no visible mortar or cement used for the 4 metre thick and over 5 metre high walls. A doorway allows access to the interior (mind your heads).
5 kms from Sneem on the N70 towards Caherdaniel. It is very well signposted off the main road.
Please close all gates on your way into the fields that surround the fort, there are sheep grazing, although you may not see them.

Why not wander into South Sneem - it's just across the bridge? Most of the action is at the other end of town, but, who knows, you mind find a nice pub or restaurant here?
