Smithwick's Brewery (Smithwicks
(St. Francis' Abbey) Brewery is situated in the heart of Kilkenny. Brewing was instigated in the city by the monks of the Franciscan Abbey who brewed their beers using the waters from the Friars Well. The Abbey closed in the 16th century and in 1710 John Smithwick started brewing commercially. The Brewery is today part of Guinness Group Ireland, brewing 1.2 million hectolitres of, principally, Budweiser and Kilkenny Irish Beer for domestic and export markets as far away as Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Japan and New Zealand).
