Kytelers Inn was pure amazing, from the delicious food to the great music. This restaurant/pub was the perfect place to enjoy our first night in Ireland. I cannot remember exactly what we had to eat but I do remember it being wonderful. Our waiter was extremely nice and the atmosphere of the restaurant was very interesting. Throughout the entire dinner we were staring at the walls and all of the decorations, from weird looking deer heads to body armor. Once we were finished with dinner we moved over to the bar area and watched a band called Raglan Rogues. My husband and I talk about that band all the time. They made a huge impact on our trip and they will never be forgotten. The main singer/musician played about 10 different instruments in the short time we were there, we were astonished. Steven and I ended up buying a CD from them and listened to it the entire 16 days in the car, and we were in the car ALOT.
Thank you Kytekers Inn and Raglan Rogues for making such a wonderful first impression of Ireland and the traditional music.
Kytelers Inn, the former home of Lady De Kyteler, is an imposing 14th Century medieval tavern in Keiran St., Kilkenny. Legend surrounds Lady de Kyteler; She was beautiful and rich, having outlived four husbands (some say she poisoned them). She was accused of Witchcraft by the townsfolk, but how much of the charges were truth and how much based on jealousy or spite is unclear. Despite being found guilty, she escaped her punishment by fleeing to England (aided by influential contacts). Her maidservant was not as fortunate, and took the punishment on her behalf - whipped through the streets and burnt at the stake.
The restaurant in the cellar is very atmospheric, tables spread out amongst the darkened pillars and arches, light flickering from the candles and large open fire.
To top it all the food is superb !!
We enjoyed it so much we seriously considered ignoring the rest of Kilkenny and returning again on our second night. We will definitely be going back again....
Favorite Dish: I enjoyed the fillet steak and jacket potato immensely, washed down with a few pints of Kilkenny's finest Smithwicks Ale. My fair lady companion had the mouthwatering Chicken O Dell. Expect to pay 12 to 20 Euro for your main course.
kyteler's inn has been in operation in kilkenny since 1324. they offer a large and varied menu and the food is very good. probably the best restaurant in kilkenny.
