We were limited to an overnight stay in Kilkenny so we had to make certain we chose a good pub for dinner and Irish music. We took good advice on Langtons Hotel and experienced a wonderful evening.
Being a Friday evening we made a reservation for 7pm and were taken to the main lounge bar/ dining area which was very busy with locals enjoying a drink at the bar. Activity at the bar lessened within a half hour as the dining area filled which made me thankful that we had reserved our table.
Service was good and we indulged in the very fine food on offer, ordering the traditional Irish meals. Our table was close to the area where the band was setting up and I now appreciate how much equipment and set up time is required. Testing of equipment and instruments took 45 minutes and sometime after 9pm the show commenced. What a blast, especially as they were only 3 metres from our table. The pub was full, the beer flowed freely and the music was traditional Irish; we could not have had it better!
This hotel also provides excellent accommodation and all inclusive packages; details on the web page.
Had a meal there on Sat night last. We were a group of ~30 people. (Not a big group in a restaurant that has seating for 220. Starters were just about passable. The Black Pudding starter was nothing more than a few slices of battered black pudding with some apple sauce. The main courses however were where the fun began. Quite a few of us ordered steaks (some rare, some medium and some well done....some with Potato and veg and some with chips)
They seemed to ignore any requests for chips. All came with potato and veg...
The waiter didn't know what meal was for what seat. They came out with plates and stood at the top of the table and shouted out what they had. It didn't matter how you'd ordered it. If you answered their call, the steak was automatically the one you'd ordered...This resulted in most people getting the wrong steak....people who ordered rare, got well-done and vice versa.
I complained to the waiter who went to get the manager. He arrived back 10 mins later (without the manager who obviously had more important things to do) and offered me a free dessert. I declined.
Overall don't waste your money in this place. It's nothing more than a food factory...
I ate there with friends last night and we were very disappointed with our meals. Without exception the main courses were extremely poor. The duck was disgracefully presented, fatty and tasteless, the steak was tough and inedible and the lamb shank was served with baked beans.
The overall bill came to 60 euro per head and
considering the quality of the food this really seemed to be quite excessive.
