The first structure on this strategic site overlooking the River Nore was a wooden tower built in 1172 by the Anglo-Norman conqueror of Ireland, Richard de Clare, also known as Strongbow. Twenty years later his son in law William Marshall erected a stone castle with four towers, three of which are part of the current structure. The castle was bought by the powerful Butler family in 1391, and their descendents continued to live there until 1935. Maintaining the castle became such an enormous expense and most of the furnishings were sold at an auction. The city bought the castle in 1967 for the huge sum of 50 pounds (now about $75 US).
My mind is blanking when I think what to write about the Castle. I really should have listened in class when its history was all explained to us. I'll have to buy a guide and brush up on my history next time I'm home.
This 12th century castle was remodelled during Victorian times. it is set in vast parklands. The castle overlooks the river Nore and has guarded this important river crossing for more than 900 years.
kilkenny castle is surrounded by a beautiful park and gardens. the gardens are open to the public and there is no admission charge.
Check out the Caste when you're in Kilkenny.. I didn't go inside though, since I was busy checking out all of the pubs. But the outside view was cool.
You can't miss this castle right in the heart of Kilkenny. Beautiful gardens surround the castle and its a very nice way to spend an afternoon especially if its sunny.
Castle interior and grounds are well worth a visit.
It has 2 very distinct aspects, so try to photograph it AM and PM. THis is the west face, and is a PM shot.
