THE CASTLE YARD IS NOW THE DESIGN CENTER

In the 1780's the famous Butler family who resided in Kilkenny Castle built the castle yard that provided stables and coach houses for the castle. The Castle Yard is now home to the National Craft Gallery and is open from 10 am to 7 pm , seven days a week. It certainly is a magnificent place to stroll around, see the buildings and the old clock but as i am not too interested in buying any of the goods on offer i did not hang around for long. They had Waterford crystal glass, woolen items, pottery and many other items for sale, and the prices were very upmarket. In the buildings at the back it seemed like there were a few offices where businesses were working on new designs. It might have been a better idea to have turned the place into a museum rather than a commercial complex.

This was where we ate lunch. I looked at the goods displayed but didn't buy anything. They have a website where you can buy on-line. There were buildings around a courtyard which was once the stables of the Kilkenny Castle where artisans worked.

I visited here purely to buy some Kilkenny wine glasses! I know I could have bought them in Clearys but I thought while in Kilkenny I will hunt some down! By the way, I landed up buying them in Clearys after all!!(large Dublin Dept store).

Anyhow, the design centre offers some great art and a nice cosy tearoom, the best bit are the gardens that surround the centre, it was spring and the flowers were just beautiful.

A great place to shop for souvenirs and relax in the gardens.

The Design Centre buildings were originally used as castle stables. Nowadays, they house design workshops. Inside, products from the workshop are sold along with expensive Irish souvenirs - there is also a nice lunch area upstairs.

National Craft Gallery across the road from the castle, but not much in there. Within these grounds, is Butler House (here's the pic), which is also a hotel. It was formerly the Dower House of Kilkenny Castle. It was refurbished by Kilkenny Design. While it looks great, but it does look rather impersonal IMO
