Desmond Castle or fortress is said to have first been built by the O'Donovans, rulers of the region into the late 12th century, and afterwards to have passed into the possession of the Kildare branch of the FitzGerald dynasty, who may be responsible for the majority of the remains of the present fortress. Desmond Castle, as it is popularly known, stands on the north bank of the Maigue. An extensive renovation has been in progress on the castle since 1996 and supervised tours are offered in the summer months.

In the year 1464, Thomas Fitz-Maurice, the 7th Earl of Kildare and his wife Joan, founded the friary and it was completed two years later. It is currently a ruin and is located inside the Adare Manor Golf Club. Should you be in Adare during easter time then you can go there on y Easter Sunday for the dawn mass which is celebrated in the Abbey.

Adare with all its wonderful straw-thatched houses is one of the places I always made a stop for a few hours, when I get into the area around Dingle-Island.
On the main street, close to the castle ( that is used as a luxury-hotel today ) you will find 6 or 7 of these great houses.
Most people say, that Adare is a tourist-trap, but I like it a lot and may highly recommend it for a stop-over. For a place to stay overnight - you better check the prices in advance !!

Adare also has 4 great friaries easy to be found around the castle as well.
One of these friaries is placed inside the golf-court of the hotel and might be visited by hotel-guests only.
When it comes to shopping, Adare is certainly also a tourist-trap, as prices are rather high !

The thing I read about and that I wanted to come and see. Lots of tourists around and parking is rather limited here in this area, but well worth seeing. Lol like I am not a tourist ;-)

Walking around Adare and discovering the old cottage is quite a lot of fun and the people who lived here many years ago must have had a lot of fun but i suppose also hardship.

Established by the Trinitarian Order as their only monastery in Ireland in the year 1230. The Abbey was restored in 1811 by the first Earl of Dunraven as the Catholic Parish church.
