    Limerick Greyhound Racing Track

    by Kristina1701 Updated Sep 12, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: This was the first time in my life I ever got to see a greyhound race. It seems to be very popular in Ireland and it's even a popular venue for collegues from work I was told.
When you buy your entrance ticket you get a brochure listing the latest of the dog's records to facilate your decision on which dog to bet on. If you decide to bet on a dog, the smallest possible amount is 1 Euro; if your dog wins you'll get 1.40 Euro lol. I decided to bet, just for fun, aaaaand ...... lost
:( lol The dog I put my money on had excellent records actually but didn't seem to be in good-condition on that day; it looked just horrible lol ;)
The race only takes about a minute or so. There's a kind of bait and all the dogs desperately try to catch it by running after it like crazy.

The University of Limerick - Ollscoil Luimnigh

    by Kristina1701 Updated Aug 1, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: UL, located in Castletroy, is a relatively new university and is supposed to be one of the best in the country; if not even THE best.
It is not too big and thus it is easy to find your way around. It is a really beautiful campus with lots of green.
Throughout the year UL is offering English language courses. I took one last summer and enjoyed it a lot. I regret not having stayed for a longer period. The English language classes usually start in the morning and end in the early afternoon. Every day one could sign up for "after class activities" such as: pub nights, going to the movies, Irish dancing, ... etc.

Fondest memory: meeting sooo many new people from all over the world at UL. In this way lots of greetings to: Virtu, Helena, Yvonne, Ana, Carlos, Peter Horan, Michael, Luciano and all the others!

    I've a horse outside...

by sourbugger Written Jan 14, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: If you want to understand something of limerick's humour then take a Youtube look at (along with several million others) at the 'Rubber bandits'. These anarchic twosome were the Irish comedy sensation of 2010, especially when their single 'I've a horse outside' almost made the christmas No1. The song references the usual Limerick obsessions : loose women and drugs, but also pokes fun at those who spend their money on 'souping up' their boy-racer cars. Apparantly some commentors in America didn't get the irony of the song and thought that the citizens of Limerick had reverted to equine transportation systems'

Mr Chrome and Blindboy always perform with plastic supermarket bags over their heads as masks. I guess that means they can go about their business in Limerick without undue attention - genius.

Their act is a kind of satirical white-boy rap thing, it's difficult to be more precise.

    Jokes about limerick

by sourbugger Written Jan 15, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: There are many, many jokes about limerick as the city has a reputation for being the crime capital of Ireland, and is invariably referred to as 'stab city'.

Most jokes are the usual recycled rubbish that were orginally coined to have a go at blacks/ jews/ women etc etc...

I will however leave you a couple that at least don't fall into that genre.

    1)

Q: why does the river run through limerick?
A: because if it walked it would get mugged.

    2)

Little boy and his mother from Limerick are in a taxi in Dublin. In the course of the conversation the taxi driver refers to 'stab city'. The little boy whispers to his mother "if he said that back at home they would shoot him".

Favorite thing: If you're looking for fresh fruits and vegetables, this is the place to go. Every Saturday farmers offer their produces there. The Milk Market, located near Williams Street, was originally built in 1830, and was reconstructed in 1994.

by kathycollins Written Sep 12, 2002

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: visit County Clare's Burren region. It looks other-worldly. Like a moonscape. Desolate, abandoned...but it is brimming in plant life! Alive in every sense...A fascinating growing region. if you are a gardener or horticulturist, you'll LOVE the burren!! And I am aware that County Clare and the Burren are not in Limerick, but VT doesn't have an appropriate place to put them!

    kathycollins's General Tip

by kathycollins Written Sep 12, 2002

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Fondest memory: After months of planning we embarked on our first trip to Ireland in May, 1999. We arrived at Shannon Airport, picked up a rental car,and headed off for the Burren. Along the way we passed this church built in the 1600s, with graveyard used thru 4 centuries.
I didn't find any identification of what church it was but it is a sample of what one might find driving along the countryside.

    Special Limerick Memories

by lauriejeanne Updated Apr 30, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Fondest memory: I spent Christmas with friends there and my fondest memory is definitely the warm plum pudding with brandy butter we had. I'll never forget how good that was!!!

There is nothing like the warmth of Irish hospitality. I was treated like a member of the family in every way!

    Growing up here

by orlikins Updated Feb 28, 2003

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Limerick city has really developed and grown during the 1990's, sparked off by the Limerick Treaty Tricentenary celebrations in 1991. It's not a tourist town by any means but at least you get to avoid lots of Aran-jumper shops!

    goingplaces's General Tip

by goingplaces Written Aug 25, 2002

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Fondest memory: We were walking down the sidewalk in Limerick and a guy walked up to us and asked for a donation for his charity. I asked for information on his charity, and he pointed behind us. There were at least a half-dozen college kids bundled up on a bed made of blankets, covered in plastic to protect from the rain that was coming down, and they were waving at us. They were having a sleep-out to raise money for a rape crisis center. I made a donation and asked the guy to take our picture--and then we all jumped onto the bed with the students.

  • General Limerick Image

by bobyn Updated Aug 14, 2004

Favorite thing: This is a general Limerick City image, just to give you an idea of what it looks like if you are partial to judging places by how they appear. This is not the main street, but they are quite similar. Please read other members tips for all other aspects. This is all I have to say about Limerick city.
