The easiest way to get there from abroad is by flying into Shannon. Thomas Cook for example offers non-stop flights to Shannon from Frankfurt. Other posibilities are flying into Dublin and then taking the train or bus to Limerick. A friend of mine did the first mentioned, however she said she regretted it! So I guess it's better and more comfortable to take the bus, even though the journey takes a little longer thus. Leave a Comment

by orlikins Shannon Airport really should be called Limerick Airport, considering Limerick is the nearest city to it! ;-) It's a big & dull-looking airport, mainly servicing North America, UK & Europe. Leave a Comment

Aer Lingus - the greenest airline in the world!! by dracko Shannon International airport, the second largest airport in Ireland, after Dublin, is very close to the city. You can fly into Shannon, and then catch a bus into town. Depending on where you're flying in from, you may get a better deal if you fly into Shannon instead of Dublin. Leave a Comment

Shannon airport taken from an Aer Lingus flight by jacob_m Limerick has good flight connections through Shannon airport. I was surprised when arriving at the airport, I had expected a rather small "countryside-airport" with mosly domestic flights to Dublin. Although Limerick is one of the largest cities in Ireland the number of people living in the area is rather limited (especially comparing to other countries/regions). But this was a very international airport. Routes There were several flights a day to the US operated by national carrier Aer Lingus, Delta airlines and Continental airlines. Destinations included are New York, Washington, Atlanta and Chicago. Aeroflot also has a link to Moscow and used to have Shannon as a stop enroute to America. Aer Lingus has a few flights a day to Dublin and London and Ryanair offers a few low-cost flights a day to e.g. London/Stansted. How to get there There were buses leaving from the airport to Limerick city centre which were supposed to take about 30-40 minutes. They are operated by Bus Eireann, check their webpage here. We decided to order a taxi instead as there wasn't a busstop close to our hotel The airport is located about 25 km northwest of Limerick city. Facilities There was a large transit hall with tax-free shops and restaurant, and a lounge for business-class passengers. Before security I think there was a cafe and a restaurant. Leave a Comment

The cheapest way to get around the city is by bus. Most, if not even all, busses depart from William Street which is a side street of O'Connell Street; just a stone's throw away from Brown Thomas department store (that's also where you get out of the bus if you arrive downtown from the suburbs). Another option is taking a taxi. A taxi drive from the city centre to Castletroy for example costs about 6-8 Euro, it pretty much depends on the taxi driver! However there are also taxi companies which have fixed prices. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

by dracko Colbert Station combines both train and bus terminals, as well as a number of shops and cafes, and is practically in the middle of the city. You can catch a train or a bus to most places in Ireland from Limerick, it appears that most train lines go through or near it. Leave a Comment Theme: Train

From their web page by RickinDutch Just a few quick tips on driving. First, a good car rental company I discovered on a package trip a few years back is Dan Dooley Car Rental. For some reason, they aren't well known outside of Ireland but I have found them the cheapest and with a bigger fleet in more locations than the usual majors. On subsequent trips, I've rented from them again and been very happy with them. Second, if you're not used to driving on the left (See - I didn't say wrong) side, I would recommend paying the extra for an automatic. Shifting with the left hand while learning to think left sided is one task too many, especially in the larger towns. Thirdly, roundabouts aren't as tough as they look. It takes planning and careful merging to avoid either being stuck circling for hours or upsetting those that know what they're doing. If traffic is heavy - the outside lane is for turning onto the next street (90 degree) or straight (180). The inside lanes are for going either straight thru(180) or the 3rd turnoff (270). On light traffic, things are looser. Finally, avoid driving in the larger cities (esp. Dublin and Limerick) as much as possible. The roads aren't built for the traffic, finding parking is a pain, and it really cuts into your drinking! Drive to wherever you're staying and use public transport. Leave a Comment

by kathycollins You need a car to explore County Clare and County Limerick. And although major roads connecting major towns are getting pretty good, the rural roads of Clare are still subject to Irish Traffic Jams. These cows shared the evening's twilight with us. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

by irishjon25 Colbert Station is situated on Parnell Street in Limerick. It is a short walk to and from the city centre. (However i would recommend a taxi if you have luggage). From Colbert Station one can arrive in Limerick by train from many town's and cities in Ireland. This station is also where the busses to the County and the rest of Ireland depart. Inside Colbert Station there is a nice cafe which serve's alcohol, sanwich bar and shop. Train & Bus ticket's can also be purchased here. There is a taxi rank directly outside the station and taxi's are easily available. Please see website for train & bus times. Leave a Comment

Limerick is a pretty small city, you can walk across it in an hour or so. If walking isn't your bag or if it's dark out, you could always catch a cab, there're plenty of them around. Leave a Comment Theme: Other
