    King John's Castle

    by Kristina1701 Written Sep 13, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

From the outside it looks really nice and interesting, no doubt, but the inside is a real disappointment; at least in my point of view. Maybe I'm a bit spoiled when it comes to castles for I live at the Rhine River, just a stone's throw away from all the picturesque castles, but the other students from Spain, Italy and Japan weren't very impressed either.
Actually there's only a huge courtyard and a tower to the left and right.

Unique Suggestions: Have a look at the excavations in the "basement" and check out the interpretative centre where the story of King John's Castle is told.

Fun Alternatives: Bunratty Castle maybe!?! Haven't been there myself but heard that it's a very popular tourist sight.

    The Milkmarket, Limerick

by daleandles Written Jul 24, 2011

The brochures available in the hotels and the Information office make the markets look a lot bigger and a lot more varied than they are. We went on a Friday morning at midday (they open at 11am) and there were only around 12 stalls. It is undercover and there are some shops open on the edge of the courtyard, but all up it was very disappointing.

Unique Suggestions: Don't go on a Friday. Saturday is the Food market and it may be larger. Sunday is the Variety market so it may be better to go then. Friday and Sunday are 1100 to 1600 and Saturday is 0800 to 1600. You'll find it on Cornmarket row.

    Red Viking tours

by daleandles Written Jul 24, 2011

Well, I guess it's a tourist trap, but a funny one. We went on the one hour Red Viking Tour of Limerick. Obviously there's not that much in Limerick as the driver, giving live commentary, seemed stuck for things to say. He showed us the local Technical college, told us when high tide and low tide was for that day. He repeated himself several times, just to fill in time. He was a lovely man, very jovial, and enjoyed his own limerick poems. No complaints with him, just the fact that Limerick just hasn't got enough to see for a tour. 10 Euro each, leaving every two hours. Worth it for the laugh!
