Smirting & The Smoking Ban

by orlikins

Smirting is a combination of the words smoking + flirting, geddit? It started when people had to go out for a ciggie after the ban was enforced, and got chatting to fellow smokers outside on the street, eyes meeting across a cloud of blue nicotine... ;) So you may just meet a local hottie in this way!!REMEMBER - Since March 2004, you CANNOT smoke inside bars, cafes or restaurants, or anywhere where people are working (e.g. taxis, offices etc.) The legislation is officially known as the Public Health (Tobacco) Act, see link to it below for a summary. You may smoke in outside in the street or in designated smoking areas, but never inside a place where people are working (includes offices, bars, restaurants, shops, shopping centres, taxis, etc)

How to make proper irish coffee!

by orlikins

This is my mum's recipe, she used to work as a barmaid, so its fairly kosher ;-)1 shot of Irish Whiskey (personal recommendation - either Paddy's or Jamesons or Powers. Dont use Scotch or Bushmills) Sugar (to taste - I like it with 1 teaspoon of sugar)Freshly brewed Hot Coffee (percolated coffee, not instant - if possible)Fresh Cream - do NOT use canned cream for this drink. Its a culinary sin.Rinse your glass with boiling water, so it is good and hot to start with. Add your Whiskey, Sugar & Coffee. Stir. Using the back of a spoon, slowly pour the cream so it sets on top of the mixture, so it's looks like a Guiness with a white head and dark coffee underneath. Otherwise it will mix.Do not stir the cream into the coffee. Traditionally, this is best sipped through the cream. The fresher the cream you can buy, the better it will taste. There is a special glass you can use for Irish coffee,...

If you ever see Pat Short - this guy pictured here or his comedy troupe the "D'Unbelieveables" in town - GO AND SEE THEM!!! They're based out in my neck of the woods in East Limerick and they do great ***-takes of County Limerick/Tipperary rural life :))
