Knights of Glin

by orlikins

Whats that all about, I hear you cry? The Knights of Glin were a branch of the powerful Fitzgerald family in West Limerick and lived in a castle in Glin village from the 1200s. They intermarried with the Normans & Anglo - Irish and their descendants still live in Limerick today. It's only open during the tourist season but you can stay in Glin Castle, if you have lots of money ;)7 euro fee to explore the ground floor & gardens. Upstairs is for staying guests only. The weather was dreadful, (even by Irish standards!), so it was not really possible to explore the gardens. The rooms are lined with impressive photos and portraits of the resident Fitzgerald family. It is important to call/email in advance to arrange a tour, otherwise you may be disappointed.

Adare village

by orlikins

Everyone who visits Limerick ends up in Adare sooner or later, it's a Guidebook "must-see". Personally I think it's a "hey, let's rip off loads of American tourists" kind of place, not quite on the scale of Killarney, but you get the idea. Lots of shops selling Aran jumpers, Guinness-branded baseball caps etc. Adare is undoubtedly pretty, but I do think it has been spoilt by tourism. You can visit the grounds of Adare manor and play golf there. Most of the pubs along the main st have live traditional irish music at night.

Celtic Gardens

by orlikins

It’s on the same grounds as Curraghchase Park on the N69. We went there as part of our VT weekend in May. There are models of a stone circle, dolmen (think Spinal Tap dimensions…) and a throne, which of course I had to try out! ;-) Oma 14 & KathyC were very taken with the rose garden at the end of the trail. The roses were not yet in bloom, but I’m sure they will look very impressive when they do. Five euro entry fee.

Oi, where's my crown? ;-)
Kilcornan Celtic Gardens

by Deefstes

There's a "must see activity" not too far from Limerick. The Kilcornan Celtic Park & Gardens are 16km outside of Limerick and 8km from Adare. It's located on an original Celtic settlement and features various dolmens, ring forts, stone circles etc.

King John's Castle

by Deefstes

The only real "must see activity" that I can think of in Limerick is King John's Castle. Built in 1200AD it's pretty old and somewhat interesting. The interior is not all that spectacular but it's worth spending an hour or so at.From the wall you get a decent view over the city though.

Lough Gur

The lake is well-known for its legends and it's archaeological digs. My friend Andrew took this pic of the lake. For more info, please see my Travelogue. :)

Curraghchase

Curraghchase was the former family grounds of the De Vere family, but is now a beautiful forest park and has some nice nature trail and lakeside walks. There is also a caravan park on site.
