  • King John's Castle

    Limerick Things to Do

Entry is through the Visitors Centre. First you walk though a static display explaining about the castle's history, then a slide show and up to the second floor to hear a story and see some wooden carved figures (with cracks in them). Then onto a 5 min film where actors are placed in front of drawings and act out certain parts of the war against...

  • St Mary's Cathedral

    Limerick Things to Do

Before entering to St.Marys cathedral I took a look around its graveyard. It was kind of experience to me as I'm coming from Estonia and we have much more different graveyards in there. In this graveyard, there were short descriptions of buried people on the gravemonument which gives you glimps back in time and understanding how much they were...

    Limerick Things to Do

The good - easy to see Irish dancing and singing without having to go to a pub and wait until 11pm. Ample parking. Extremely talented singer and dancers and musicians. Good view from all tables, as there are two tiers of seating. The bad - 39 Euro per adult. Entertainment may have been great but the food was not. Limp salad on bread and butter...

  • Treaty Stone

    Limerick Things to Do

It's over the Thomondbridge off the Ennis road, facing King Johns Castle. Yes its just a big old stone with a chipped corner. But it means a lot to local history & has come to symbolise Limerick in the same way Dublin's symbol is its castle. The treaty stone refers to the Treaty of Limerick signed in 1691 between the Irish/French and English/Dutch...

St.Marys exploring took one hour from me as there is so much to look. * The consistorial court * The Chapel of St.James & Mary Magdalene * The Lady Chapel * The altar * Windows * The Chapel of the Holy Spirit * The Jebb Chapel * The Misericords * The organ * The O'Brien Chapel * The Pery or Glentworth Chapel etc. I was impressed almost all of...

    Limerick Things to Do

The Univeristy of Limerick is fairly new - but it is rapidly growing in status and size. An influx of European Union funding in the early 90's is apparent in the new buildings and vibrant energy. There is always something going on from high powered lectures to concerts from renowned and local artists. The campus itself is quite pleasant, with a...

    Limerick Things to Do

The Hunt Museum was surprisingly impressive. Located in the Old Customs House, their permanent collection is quite extensive including 2000 peices from the Hunt Collection with works of art by Yeats, Renior and Picasso. A Greek coin, said to be one of the infamous "30 pieces of silver" is on display, as well as the Mary, Queen of Scots Cross and...

  • Knights of Glin

Whats that all about, I hear you cry? The Knights of Glin were a branch of the powerful Fitzgerald family in West Limerick and lived in a castle in Glin village from the 1200s. They intermarried with the Normans & Anglo - Irish and their descendants still live in Limerick today. It's only open during the tourist season but you can stay in Glin...

  • Lough Gur

The lake is well-known for its legends and it's archaeological digs. My friend Andrew took this pic of the lake. For more info, please see my Travelogue. :)

  • Adare village

Everyone who visits Limerick ends up in Adare sooner or later, it's a Guidebook "must-see". Personally I think it's a "hey, let's rip off loads of American tourists" kind of place, not quite on the scale of Killarney, but you get the idea. Lots of shops selling Aran jumpers, Guinness-branded baseball caps etc. Adare is undoubtedly pretty, but I do...

  • Celtic Gardens

It’s on the same grounds as Curraghchase Park on the N69. We went there as part of our VT weekend in May. There are models of a stone circle, dolmen (think Spinal Tap dimensions…) and a throne, which of course I had to try out! ;-) Oma 14 & KathyC were very taken with the rose garden at the end of the trail. The roses were not yet in bloom, but I’m...

  • Kilcornan Celtic Gardens

There's a "must see activity" not too far from Limerick. The Kilcornan Celtic Park & Gardens are 16km outside of Limerick and 8km from Adare. It's located on an original Celtic settlement and features various dolmens, ring forts, stone circles etc.

  • King John's Castle

The only real "must see activity" that I can think of in Limerick is King John's Castle. Built in 1200AD it's pretty old and somewhat interesting. The interior is not all that spectacular but it's worth spending an hour or so at.From the wall you get a decent view over the city though.

  • Curraghchase

Curraghchase was the former family grounds of the De Vere family, but is now a beautiful forest park and has some nice nature trail and lakeside walks. There is also a caravan park on site.
