Cong Abbey is a place worth a visit. There is only a part of the old Abby left to be seen, but there are plenty of lovely details left.Just take a closer look at all of the windows and you will see some of them with great ornaments or at least some remains of them.Of course the old Abbey was also taken as a background for some of the scenes of the movie "The Quiet man" - in Germany it was called "Der Sieger"

An Gaeltacht

In the northwest of Mayo, including parts of Archill Island, you’ll find a Gaeltacht, which means that Irish is spoken here. This means, that also street signs are in Irish which can be confusing. A map with both English and Irish name is very helpful! And if you wonder what “Clocha Beaga Scartha” on this photo means – a little bit later came the same sign in English (fortunately!), and it said “loose chippings”. I guess that’s the most popular sign in Ireland...

Turf bogs

by himalia11

Turf can be found everywhere in Irland, although we mostly saw those “turf fields” in the west. This photo was taken when we drove some small streets west of Bangor. Turf is widly used for heating, and sitting at a turf fire if it’s raining outside is so nice! It has a special smell which you also can notice if you drive around.

Hiking Advise

by sabsi

If you meet someone on a hiking path, no matter whether you are in a deserted area or on a busy path, say hello. And if you meet someone who says hello reply for god's sake!! I met so many tourists who didn't reply when I said hello but stared at me as if I were an alien and I thought that was very annoying!
