To be honest, we only ate dessert here. We had a huge lunch and decided to have a dessert and call it a day. The restaurant we wanted was closed on Monday and Franzini's had been recommended along with a couple others. We walked all over Trim and it seemed all the restaurants and even some of the pubs were closed. We had about given up and saw a small bakery near the river so went in to see if we could get something there. No luck; he was just closing but suggested Franzini's and gave us directions. It was only a half block so we walked over.
Favorite Dish: Here's my journal entry for the restaurant: "Franzini's is by the castle and the river. It’s lovely but we weren’t very hungry so opted for dessert and coffee which was superb. When the waitress came over to take our order, Ed said, “We’ll start with dessert” and she looked shocked. She finally recovered herself and started to take our dessert order but we explained we had had a very large lunch and could only find room for dessert. We all had a laugh. The dessert was fabulous, by the way. It looks like a wonderful restaurant and had a good menu. Probably would be a great place to eat."
We saw meals brought out to a few people while we were there and they all looked scrumptious. If you are visiting the Castle, it's right next door and would be very convenient.
Nearing the end of a month in Ireland, we decided to spend a couple nights near Trim to visit New Grange and Knowth. We found Cranmor House B&B which was lovely. Anne, our hostess, recommended Dunderry Lodge Restaurant in the tiny nearby village of Dunderry so we drove over.
It’s wonderful. You are seated in the lounge by the fireplace and they take your order. You relax in the lounge, with drinks if you like, and when your meal is ready, they come and get you, seat you and serve you immediately. On a cool, rainy evening, there is no better place to be.
Favorite Dish: Here's my Journal entry for the evening:
Ed had pork meatballs for a starter and I had a rich seafood chowder. We both got roast breast of duck and it was superb. They serve the vegetables family style which is nice. I took more than my fair share of autumn squash mashed and wonderfully seasoned! We were much too full for dessert but I’m sure those would be equally good. The price was very reasonable for the quality.
We wanted to return the next night for another dinner but they are closed on Monday so we had to find another restaurant.
If you are staying in Trim to be near the Dublin airport for your flight out the next day, find this restaurant and have a great last dinner in Ireland. If you're just in Trim to see the sights, this restaurant is definitely worth finding to make Trim a favorite place on your journey through Ireland..
