In the centre of Clonmel is the Main Guard, a distinguished late 17th century building which was formerly a court house. Later the arches housed shops but now they have been opened up and here you will find the tourist office. They can provide you with a very good one-sheet map and guide for a walk around the main places of interest. As in a lot of Irish towns, there is quite a bit of 18th and early 19th century Georgian architecture - as usual, some of it restored to its former glory, some of it not. The Town Hall is brighter and more cheerful than most of its kind, originally dating from the 17th century but altered in the 1880s. Should you wonder why there is a gate half way up the wall in one of the pictures, this is not a normal feature of Irish towns - there's an ironmonger just round the corner!

Clonmel Restaurants

I had the misfortune of eating in Raheen House this weekend. The food was nice (if a bit on the expensive side for what we received). However the problem was the loud nightclub next door that was blaring out music from 8pm when we arrived. We could barely speak to each other without shouting and I watched other tables arrive, eat quickly and leave as fast as possible. The staff seemed to regard this as normal and when asked to request the music be turned down it was instead turned up even louder.

Even if they paid me to eat there I would not return. It was a painful experience.

Favorite Dish: The Quail stuffed with black pudding was nice.
