Geoff's: Still the Coolest after all these Years

by SabrinaSummerville Updated Feb 13, 2006

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

When I was in my later teens and early 20's, Geoff's was the place to go if you were a student or a hippy and wanted to look cool. Funnily enough, it was a bit of a status symbol to get your dad to go there with you and get a window table on a Saturday afternoon, while you drank pints of cider and watched the streetlife outside.

Twenty years later the students and hippies have grown up, but it's still one of the best places to go in town. Geoffs managed to hang onto the original crowd and attract an additional younger group, so that you now have accountants, bankers and auctioneers rubbing shoulders with bikers and students.

Most pubs in Waterford have changed hands again and again in this boom time for the City, but Geoff's remains in the secure ownership of Geoff Power, the man who gave the pub his name. Geoff has managed the almost impossible - he has doubled the size of his bar while retaining all the slate floored, wooden tabled, old hippy feel.

Now they do great bar food, too, so you really don't have to move. They have never given into being taken over by large plasma tv's blaring the Saturday game and you can chill here for hours.

I still recommend the window seats!

Dress Code: Dress whatever way you feel comfortable, though it is really a casual place. Be prepared - Geoff's is the only Waterford pub where people still queue to get in, especially on friday and Saturday nights.

Harveys: Outdoor Drinking all year Round

by SabrinaSummerville Updated Mar 3, 2006

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Waterford's first weatherproof outdoor bar opened shortly before Christmas at The Manor in the heart of the City.

The smoking in the workplace ban in Ireland has prompted a move towards cleverly designed super-pubs that push the wording of the smoking laws to the limit by creating amazing weatherproof gardens, open to the air, which allow the punters to smoke because technically they are not enclosed places.

Tonight I decided to go and see this wonder-pub for myself. I don't smoke and never have, but I had to see what it was all about.

Ireland is presently in the grip of its coldest spell in ten years, with ground temperatures reported at minus sixteen in some parts of the country. I was therefore particularly interested to see just how weatherproof this place is. The verdict is - it works! That saying, I left my sheepskin coat on when I was in the garden area as occasionally I could feel an icy blast.

There's a very large open and airy indoor bar with an enormous oval bar. It's a great place to sit and people watch. The decor is comfortably stylish without being OTT as a lot of the new pubs can be. At the back of this area it opens into a huge indoor/outdoor garden. This area is covered with sliding panels that are open to the night, but which can be slid across to provide protection in the event of rain. In the back left corner there's a waterfall and the area over that is uncovered at all times, thus complying with the open air requirement. The sliding panels of the roof are covered with luminous stars which are quite realistic. There are palm trees and other plants growing naturally throughout and the lighting is very clever. There are heating panels hanging freely from the roof frame and the temperature is set at a constant 22 degrees.

There's a live DJ and the atmosphere is terrific - a place for people of all ages and walks of life to see and be seen. They also serve food and the reports are good, although I haven't yet eaten there.

It is without a doubt the in place to go in Waterford at present.

Dress Code: Whatever you like, but mostly smart casual.

    The Gingerman: Nightlife all Afternoon

by SabrinaSummerville Updated May 14, 2006

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Just about everywhere in Ireland you will discover that the weekend pastimes include spending Saturday and Sunday lunchtimes and afternoons in pubs.

On Saturdays people usually go to the pubs to watch the rugby and football matches. The odd time you'll have a good match on a Sunday, but Sundays are more usually family days.

Then there are those of us (including my friends and I) who head to the pub on a Saturday afternoon having spent the morning shopping till we drop. As Saturday shopping involves buying lots and lots of clothes, shoes, and make-up we therefore find ourselves in a City Centre pub and one of my current favourites in The Gingerman.

Even the name of this pub is appealing. Inside it's old fashioned - you know that kind of pub with wooden floors and hard-looking wooden benches of seats that are actually more comfortable than the cushiest armchair?

In the Winter I'll languish here sipping hot chocolate with marshmallow floaters, and on a Summer day I'll quench my thirst with a sparkling water.

The food, too, is divine. Really great barfood - soups, sandwiches and yummy full dinners at terrific prices. My brother highly recommends the seafood chowder or the bacon ribs with calcannon (mashed potato with chopped cabbage and onion).

I believe they have music at night, but I've never been here at night. Actually, I was - but it's so long ago that I don't remember anything except that the atmosphere was great.

Dress Code: Dress whatever way you wish, though you will probably feel comfortable in casual.

That saying, the fashion here in Ireland at the moment is very glamorous for ladies at night, plus wall to wall designer t-shirts and jeans for the boys.

    Oskars: The Pub Next Door

by SabrinaSummerville Updated Aug 4, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This tip qualifies equally under the Restaurant tips as it does under nightlife, but as I have so many tips under restaurants I'll post here with a link from the other heading.

Oskars is an upmarket bar with a full restaurant menu which is about 7 mins walk from my home.

It's a great place to come at any time of the day, but especially at night when there are live bands playing. It attracts a 30something and upwards crowd age wise.

The pub has a free newsletter that is available from neighbouring hotels or from the pub itself. This details up and coming bands and other events in the pub.

The owner, Bob Tweedy, owns other pubs in the City and he keeps a close eye on the business. It's a very well run establishment and worth a visit.

  • Downes Bar: Want a REAL Waterford Pub?

    by reni10 Updated Feb 29, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Downes is probably the best pub in Waterford; it is a no-frills place and was opened in 1797.

It attracts all types of people from youngsters to old men to theatre types to indie types to rich people, A REAL MIX.

No music is played and it is all about conversation and drinking.

This pub is NOT touristy at all and so may not be what the average tourist expects; if you want to see where real Irish people drink then this is the one for you!

If you like Downes then another great place for you will be Geoffs pub.

    Rubys: Dancin' Shoes

    by kiki_irl Written Jan 24, 2007

Most people going out in Waterford City will undoubtedly end up in Rubys Nightclub. All of the good pubs and clubs are in one area of the city, which is handy! There are bout 5 clubs in the city centre plus late night bars etc. On certain nights some of the other clubs can be quiet empty, they never quite fill up. But Rubys is always full as everyone seems to gravitate towards there!

Dance floor is quite small, in the centre of the club. Smoking area to the rear (drinks not allowed)

First Tuesday of every month (Ruby Tuesday) is gay night. Clubs generally open at 11.00pm, over 18s only, ID is normally required and admission ranges from e8 - e15 depending on the night/event (new years etc.) and is free on Sundays.

Normally closes round 2.30 (again depending on the night)

    Dress Code: No sneakers
    No hoodies
Coats must be put into cloakroom (€2)
