I wrote the following praise of this restaurant when I first joined the site. It changed hands in or about October 2007. I have eaten there once since and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, but I would need t go back to be sure. In the meantime, read on to enjoy the place as it once was.
I believe that Johnny Fan was one of the first to establish Chinese restaurants in Ireland, and he chose to eventually settle in Waterford.
Here he has created a number of restaurants, but his current flagship is Johnny Fan's Chinese and Seafood restaurant in High Street in Waterford City,
This is a really lovely place to eat, especially if you are with children for lunch. The staff are very child-friendly and will do their best to entertain your kids and leave you peacefully to eat.
The food is the very best that Chinese has to offer, plus they source the most excellent local seafood. They have a special set menu for lunch which is terrific value, and a very extensive evening a la carte menu (which can also be ordered at lunch if you want to splash out). On weekdays and Saturdays the special lunch menu is priced at only Euro12.98 per person. On Sunday this rises to just over Euro 16 per person. This is for a three course meal, with an excellent selection of meals to choose from.
The main course dishes on the a la carte menu start at around Euro 17, with starters priced around Euro8.
There is an extensive wine list, with some very special rare wines. There is also a full liquor license.
The decor is elegant and almost old fashioned, although the building housing the restaurant is relatively new. The setting works, however, and you will feel very comfortable. This is an authentic Chinese restaurant and Johnny always has incense burning in front of an oriental icon.
There is a main front room, and a more private back room. While lunch is usually served between 12.30 and 2.30, if you are sitting in the back room they will let you sip away at your wine and chat to your hearts content for as long as you like.
Favorite Dish: I recommend the house special mixed starter followed by the locally caught fresh lobster with ginger and spring onion. Pricey, but great!
They have also introduced a number of interesting new dishes lately, with the advent of a new chef. I love the prawn cakes and also the dumplings. Mmmm.
