La Palma is a locally owned and very authentic Italian restaurant.
The family are Irish Italian and both the Husband and Wife proprietors are the chefs. The Maitre d' and head waitress are the son and daughter-in-law of this lovely Irish-Italian family.
The food is divine and the menu varies seasonally. Much of the produce is sourced locally and in Italy. The proprietors take regular trips back home to ensure that the best of Italian produce is served. They take time and care in menu preparation, and this is evident in the dishes on offer. presentation is thoughtful and artistic - some dishes look so pretty you won't want to eat them.
The pasta tastes like proper Italian pasta in that the sauces are not too thick and heavy. I note with other places that they go to town on the cream or the tomato sauce - not here.
The original present site of La Palma has recently become a pizza and pasta "quickie" restaurant called "Espresso." The original La Palma has now moved 100 yards up the street to a wonderful Georgian house on The Mall. The new premises has been decorated in such amazing style by one of the sons of the owner that he should consider a change of career from chef to interior decorator.
Call in and enjoy a digestif with Claudio and ask him to help you choose the perfect Italian wine to accompany your meal.
Favorite Dish: For a main course I recommend the Duboin bayprawns sauteed in garlic ginger and lime and served with a timbale of rice, or the fillet steak with their own garlic butter.
The desserts are delightfully Italian and impossible to resist. Recently I enjoyed the strudel - different from the norm, it was made in the form of tree upstanding mini-canneloni filled with strudel fruits. This was served with one of their many home made ice creams and topped with spun sugar. It was sooo divine.
OPEN - mainly for dinner an d occasionally for lunch.
Suzanne_M and I went to La Palma on our day-trip to Waterford and we were both thouroughly impressed by the warm friendly and knowledgeable service provided by the waiters. Good value too.....
Favorite Dish: You MUST have the Baci Sorrento dessert (moist dark chocolate and amaretto cake) ....it's up there in the Top 5 Chocolate Cakes I Have Ever Had! :-))
