Side View of 33 The Mall (centre building) by SabrinaSummerville, 1 more photos Unfortunately, this restaurant closed in the Spring of 2007. The building is presently on the market for sale (October 2007). You may be interested in reading on for the history of this very beautiful bow shaped building. For many years I had been looking at a derelict but once beautiful ond building on The Mall in Waterford. The building was unusual in that it was entirely bow-shaped from top to bottom. The story was that someone had jumped from the top window and so it had lain derelict since. I don't know how true that story is, but I was thrilled several months ago to note that it was being renovated and reconstructed. I was even happier still to discover that the developers (two local brothers) had joined forces with the owners of the incredible Coast restaurant in Tramore to establish a new style of eatery for Waterford - this is known as 33 The Mall. The restaurant is situated on four levels in this tall, narrow building, and is decorated with perfect Georgian charm. The tables range in size and are far enough from each other so that you don't feel everyone can hear your conversation. Service is brisk. You are immediately seated and brought your menu, a drinks order is taken and delivered, and your food arrived very soon after it is ordered. The menu is great in that you can order what you want from it in whatever combination - if you just want a bowl of soup, then that's all you have to order. However, it's just about impossible to stop at the soup. Try the fresh crab, or the salad of crispy bacon avocado and prawns, or even the home made fish and chips. You can go for lunch or dinner. Reservations are not required but are advisable. As for the desserts - how about raspberries with a hot white chocolate sauce????
Definitely the raspberries with hot chocolate sauce - the contrast in flavours between the cold tart raspberries and the smooth, sweet, warm sauce. Mmmmm. As a little addendum to this post I must add that my sister went to this place last week and was really disappointed in her meal - she felt that everything had been pre-prepared, then frozen or chilled. Not so good that time:-( Leave a Comment Theme: Eclectic/InternationalPrice: US$21-30 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: 33 The Mall, Waterford.Phone: 051 859823Directions: Opposite City Hall in Waterford City, just off the Quay.

View of the River Suir from the Quay in Waterford by SabrinaSummerville BY WAY OF UPDATE, THIS LOVELY PLACE IS NO LONGER TRADING. SAD:-( This delightful Thai restaurant on three stories opened in Waterford about five months ago and, apart from some unfortunate stories of teething problems at the start, is now a great place for some really good Thai food. The restaurant is situated on the Quay in Waterford and is almost directly opposite the bus station. It is also just five minutes walk from the train station and is therefore an ideal place to eat if you're travelling to or from the City. The view from the window seats is of the river and it's pleasant to sit there and watch the boats as you eat. The interior decor is wonderful - a great mix of stripped stone walls, heavy wood, and Thai upholstery and authentic ornamentation. On the second storey there's a wonderful canopied love seat with silk-covered cushions where you'd love to languish with your lover anjoying a Mai Thai special coffee (a version of Irish coffee that uses Thai whiskey). The service is quick and efficient, the food tasty and good. Between three of us today we ordered the barbecued duck, the lemon chicken, and the jumbo prawns. We tasted a bit of each, and each of the three of us had a different favourite dish. The fried rice was clean and mixed with tiny vegetables and meat pieces. Lots of places just serve a mix of brown coloured sticky rice that you just know is full of fat. With our coffees they brought a bowl of the tastiest thin biscuits and then a plate of chocolates. The kitchen was closed by then so we couldn't order desserts, but we didn't really need them. There's a special lunch menu that offers great value for money, and they will also let you order from a la carte for lunch. I won't mark the price panel, as prices vary very much depending on which menu you order from. I will definitely be back.
The jumbo barbecued prawns. I love prawns, and these were really tasty. Leave a Comment Theme: Pan-Asian and Pacific RimAddress: The Quay, Waterford.Directions: Opposite the bus station on the Quay.

Food Garden at Becketts by SabrinaSummerville Becketts opened several years ago on the site of a popular old local pub. The new owners gutted the inside and presented us with a clean , bright and open new interior. The walls are painted a cool cream and each wall or section of wall bears an inscription in the form of a famous quote, with a humorous twist. One of my favourites reads "My Doctor advised me to stop indulging in intimate meals for four.......unless there were three other people present." Downstairs is set out in a casual layout, more on the style of a bar than a restaurant. They do have a full liquor license, though the emphasis is definitely on food. Upstairs is more formal and available for private parties and at really busy times such as Christmas. In good weather there's a really great garden out the back where you can enjoy your food and drink in blissful surroundings. They serve throughout the day and the menu changes as the day progresses - lunch menu, afternoon menu, then evening. At each interval you can enjoy as much or as little as you like - soup, delightful open or closed sandwiches, and full meals. Prices are very reasonable for very generous and tasty helpings of food. Expect to pay perhaps five euro for a huge bowl of thick and fishy chowder, and eleven euro for a main meal. More elaborate dishes are available at a la carte prices, with the most expensive at just under twenty euro. The business is staffed by the owners in addition to other staff, so you can be sure that a close eye is maintained over everything.
I love the seafood platter - smoked and fresh salmon, king prawns that taste as if they've been marinated in brandy, shelled mussels, crab mayonnaise, very fresh salad leaves, tomato, scallion, red onion, freshly made dressing. Just look at it and then devour it. Don't order a starter with this because you just won't finish it! They also do a fabulous home made chicken liver pate. It is very rich and they serve huge portions with toasted brioche, red onion marmalade, and large side salad. My all time fave is their Caesar salad with chicken which they serve with a poached egg and freshly grated parmesan on a base of garlic bread. I have this as a main course because it is so yummy and plentiful. As this is close to home I find that I come here perhaps once a week - a testament to its goodness. It's a hugely popular place with families and children are made very welcome. Since creating this tip, the establishment stopped selling food in October 2007. It is nevertheless still the best place in Waterford from which to purchase fine wines and is worth a visit just to explore the original vaults. High Street in Waterford is a small, narrow, paved street and houses just four restaurants. The first to occupy this street for this purpose was (and still is) The Wine Vault. The proprietor, David Dennisson, is a internationally recognised sommellier and established this wonderfully atmospheric restaurant and wine bar in a genuine vault. I took some pics when I had lunch there today, but unfortunately they're a bit blurred. The restaurant is on two levels, the top level is entered directly from the street. You walk directly into a wood panelled, stone walled, cosy restaurant and bar area, with a couple of little arched nooks for cosy dining. Downstairs you will find the original vaults, fascinating! The wines are stored here and there are also a number of tables which are usually used at night, complete with candles, for incredibly romantic dining. This would also be a wonderful spot for history buffs and ask the staff to fill you in on the history of the place. The food is varied, with French and Italian influences. There is an a la carte menu for both lunch and dinner, with daily specials displayed on blackboards throughout. You can go for a glass of wine, a dessert and coffee, or a full meal. No matter what you want to eat you will be assured of prompt, pleasant and efficient service. Try to book in for one of the wine tasting evenings where you will get dinner and different wines with each course. There are also regular talks and tastings presented by the international Vineyards and Wineries. You can also buy wines and gift sets. The restaurant is extremely popular, so it is advisable to book at all times. You may be lucky enough to get a table without a booking, but don't take a chance.
Again, it varies from time to time, but I find that they are particularly good with fish and seafood dishes. They will also put themselves out to cater for special dietary needs. I haven't marked a price bracket as it varies between lunch and dinner, there are lots of special offers, and you might just want wine. I think it represents terrific value for money. View of Chez K's by SabrinaSummerville ANOTHER GREAT PLACE THAT HAS CLOSED ITS DOORS IN EARLY 2008. I BELIEVE A NEW OWNER IS POISED TO TAKE OVER, BUT IT REMAINS CLOSED AS AT MAY 2008. tHAT SAYING, THE PREVIOUS OWNER RUNS A TERRIFIC SEAFOOD RESTAURANT IN DUNMORE EAST KNOWN AS THE SPINNAKER - SEE MY DUNMORE EAST PAGES. Chez K's changed hands about two years ago and the new owners, Niall and Maria Edmondson, have given the whole place an upmarket but available twist. The restaurant is large and airy. The front area is wonderful to sit in and have a drink while you wait for your table. There's a full and well stocked bar. The tables are set a fair distance from each other - there's nothing worse than hearing your neighbours conversation. There's a seperate curtained off area near the back which is ideal for small private parties. A grand piano graces the centre of the room and live piano music is to be heard regularly. The whole atmosphere is that of fun with brightly painted walls, modern paintings by local artists adorning the walls, and an open kitchen. The menu is varied and everything tastes simply divine. There is a special four course menu at 69 euro for two people including a bottle of wine. Outside of that the a la carte menu has dishes ranging from about 8 euro for a starter to 30 euro for the most expensive main course. It's worth every penny. Ask for Gerry, the restaurant Manager - he's young, excellent, and has been with the place from the start. He's genuinely interested in the business and will help advise you on the best dish of the day. There's an extensive wine list - indeed Niall Edmondson has worked as Manager of several renowned five star hotels and knows what he's at.
I adore the assiette of seafood in a light cocunut curry mousseline sauce. The combination of flavours electrifies your tastebuds. Ginos has been open since I was at college and in the twenty five years or so since then it has change very little - except perhaps to expand the floor area to allow space for more diners. The menu is simple indeed - mouthwatering home made pizzas, garlic bread, basic side salads, and incredible home made ice creams. This place sells my favourite pizza in the world and that says a lot considering the amount of time I have spent in pizzaland countries;-) The sell to in house diners and also to the take away market. They do not, however, deliver. It's always busy so be prepared to wait for a table. It's also right in the heart of the pub centre of the city so would be a good place to come for casual food before setting off on a night of clubbing. Service is fast and pleasand and everything is really fresh.
I recommend the Ginos special pizza which has tons of ham, pepperoni, mushroom, peppers, corn, tomato, onion, salami and so on. Lots and lots of cheese there too! I would follow this with either the death by chocolate or the banana Baileys. Both of these are totally mouthwatering ice cream dishes. They have a limited wine selection at very reasonable prices. A couple of years ago there was a superb restaurant in Waterford called Chez K's. It moved from older premises to new, changed hands, and just got better and better. Then the new owners closed the business and moved to a different type of restaurant business in Dunmore East and the whole idea of Chez K's became a distant memory. Rumours abounded that the amazing manager of the former Chez K's was negotiating to buy out the lease, but the an Italian restaurant opened (and flopped) on the premises and we figured it was all just rumour. Then the glamorous Fitzwilton ffour star boutique hotel opened in what most would think of as perhaps not the best site in town and, lo and behold, Chez K's was reborn at the Fitzwilton complete with Gerry the former Manager. We didn't get to try it until today, and in retrospect that was perhaps a good thing and we won't be rushing back. The decor is nice - bistro style, with high ceilings, mood lighting, and vibrant modern art on the walls. Our waitress, Siobhan, was lovely and efficient and on duty alone. Later one of the hotel staff came to help her when a pre-booked large party arrived. Other than us, there was nobody else in the restarurant.
The bread was tomato & fennel plus brown. They were both home made and absolutely gorgreous. My sister and I started with the warm smoked salmon salad. How could they get that wrong? But they did. The salmon was icy cold and served with one type of salad leaf only plus some tasty piquant sauce. Now there is a major difference between warm and cold anything, but especially smoked salmon which cooks slightly when warmed. We passed on our complaints to the chef. My Mother had a bacon potato cake with fried curly kale and a quarter of a scotch egg. I could be wrong but I'd swear they bought the scotch egg pre-made in a local deli because it didn't taste either fresh or tasty; plus to me the bacon and cabbage duo was too salty. Main courses were chicken with sausage and nut stuffing (sister), roast beef (Mum), and beer battered haddock (me). The first shock was that the three plates were brought to the table with one single-sized portion of veg between the three of us. The second shock was my fish - it looked for all the world as if it had been pre-fried, trimmed of batter to make it easier to store, and then re-fried so that there were straight lines at either end with the fish showing through. I'll add pics to illustrate. The other dishes were passable, except for the yorkshire pudding on Mum's roast beef. While it was definitely home made, the chef clearly hasn't mastered the trick of adding the batter to really hot fat with the result that this was the ugliest yorkshire pud I have ever seen (again, pics to demonstrate). Complaints to the chef produced one more plate of veg. I was looking forward to my dessert and opted for chocolate brownies as my young nephew fancied sharing. Disaster. There was no taste of chocolate from what appears to have been a christmas-pudding type mix with a bag of slivered almonds thrown in. Price-wise, it's €20 a head for three courses and tea/coffee. They took off the cost of the 2 smoked salmon meals. We weren't a bit happy and won't be back. Dooley's Hotel is situated in a prime position in Waterford City, directly across from the bus station. Substantially renovated in recent years, its Dry Dock bar overlooks the main Quay and the Suir River and attracts a great crowd morning, noon, and night. The bar is warm and inviting. There are two main sections to it and they are decorated in a horse-racing theme with genuine memorabilia from the historic past of Waterford horse racing. That is not to say that the sport is not still enjoyed here, as the nearby Tramore racecourse is very much a vibrant thing of the present. The floors are flagstone and the walls stripped brick. Tables and chairs are rustic wood and the thick oriental rugs underfoot make it all feel like an extension of home.
Bar food service begins with a full Irish breakfast that is offered for a mere €4.50 and extends into lunch and afternoon snacks with paninis at €6.95 and more substantial meals at equally attractive prices. Food is good and service in general is efficient. That saying, it does get very busy and you may have to catch someone's attention to ensure promptness if you are in a hurry. What can I say about Emiliano's? The food was, in a word, outstanding. I started out with the Insalata Caprese, which was plentiful and very tasty. As a main course, I had the Spinach Ravioli. The pasta was delicious, and the filling creamy. For desert, I had the tiramisu, which melts in your mouth. The place is a little small, so calling ahead for reservations, especially on the weekends, is a must. There is an early bird special from 5pm-7pm, which has a lot of food for the value. They also serve lunch from 12-2:30.

Small pizza place in the Apple Market. The only other Gino's is in Cork city. Friendly staff, good prices, nice atmosphere (suitable for families). Its only a small restaurant but its well worth a visit. No need to book, just turn up. Also do pizza for collection (no deliveries). Def. the best pizza in town!
