Sailing Boats at Dunmore East

Waterford is renowned for all things maritime, and in July 2005 it was fortunate to host the world famous International Tall Ships Race. I will post some pics here and elsewhere of this spectacular event, and the good news is that we're planning to host this event again in the near future.

In addition to this Waterford City has its own marina right off the Quay on the River Suir, by the Tower Hotel and the Quality Marina Hotel.

Dunmore East, ten miles drive from the City, is infamous for avid fans of sailing and is a delightful place to go on a sunny day and watch the sailboats on the glistening water.

Waterford is a large port and one will regularly see the vessels of the Irish Navy moored at the Quay.

Finally, Dunmore East has now become an important destination for some of the largest cruise ships in the world, to include visits from the QE2 and that floating testament to luxury, the ship known as "The World."

Anyone who has the remotest interest in matters maritime will find something to love in Waterford.

Kiteboarders on Tramore Beach
1 more image

I didn't even know this sport existed until quite recently.

Regularly on a Saturday or Sunday I will take a walk on the three mile long Tramore beach, and I was surprised to see all the kiteboarders out on the last windy, sunny day that the tide was out.

Kiteboarding is a bit like skateboarding, but it is more an extreme sport by reason of the fact that it is dependant on the wind and when it whips up to a strong gale it's quite dangerous. Oh, to explain - the "skateboarders" tie giant kites to their boards and "surf" the sand, propelled along by the breeze. They have to be careful that they're not dragged into the sea!

It took my breath away just to watch them.

The sport takes place on Tramore beach on clear windy days - if you just wander along the beach you cannot miss them and the kiteboards are there to rent.

Equipment: A kiteboard - rent one on the beach. Bring knee pads and a helmet - though these can be rented, too.
