I have a small claim to fame here, but only by association. One of my sisters was the first Airline Station Manager at this airport. She met her husband at a party in the aeroclub there, too, so it holds a special fondness for me.
I guess I have my own connection to the place as I was the Lawyer on the Compulsory Purchase of the land to improve the road access to the airport.
This airport is the kind that you love to fly in and out of. It's small (tiny even), has plenty of parking, is never crowded, and the staff are ever helpful and smiling.
At present (May 2009) the airline working from the airport is Aer Arann - www.aerarann.com. They offer a number of scheduled flights in and out of Waterford to include two destinations in France, Amsterdam, Malaga, Faro, several UK detinations etc.
The airport is about 7 miles from the City centre and there are a number of taxi services that are very efficient.
There is a tiny airport outside Waterford, but it only has flights to London Luton & Liverpool.
You are better off flying either to Cork or Dublin. Both cities are about a 2 hour drive from Waterford
Waterford Airport is great, although possibly the smallest airport I have ever seen. The only airline to operate from here is Aer Arann with flights to London Luton and Manchester in the UK, and to Lorient in France.
It's only a 15 minute drive into the centre of Waterford. A taxi will set you back 15-20 euro.
Be warned if you are arriving from the UK. The airport has no money exchange, so bring euros with you if you are planning on taking a cab into the city.
