Only a few miles from Mullingar lies :An excellent tour of the distillery in Kilbeggan (Lockes Distillery)Unlike many other tours, you can do this at your own pace. The original equipment used to triple-distill the Whiskey is virtually all in place. The highlight has to be of course the tasteing at the end. You can also buy the stuff of course.Nb...more
You will find a small Famine Memorial erected at Dominick Place, in the centre of town. The water feature, is somewhat understated but allows you time to stand and think about those events. Most estimates put the number of dead at around one million, millions more emigrated in the following years.Even with all the modern building work Ireland still...more
The Royal canal was built as a rival to the Grand Canal in Ireland, but never really took off in the same way. This waterway, that passes through the middle of the town is naviagable back to Dublin, a distance of just over 50 miles.Alternatively there are a number of walks that are possible along it in either directionmore
The spa complex attached to the Bloomfield house hotel (see seperate tip) comes highly recommended by Sourbugger, and more importantly by SB's wife, who is the authority in such things.Being something of a Spa virgin I was given a form to fill-in before my massagae/facial/waxing etc.Where it asked for 'Date ?' and 'Sex ?', I obviously wrote "Yes,...more
The Belvedere estate, now in the hands of the nation is by far and away the only real 'must see' in the area. The house itself is evocative and well presented, if not spectaular. Dublin Road, Mullingar, Ireland
Satisfaction: Very Good
Good for: Business
I find most chinese restaurants in Ireland (outside of Dublin) to be quite poor, and overpriced.
It was therefore suprising to find a very modern chinese serving good food at reasonable-ish prices.
We only had a take away, but I would gladly eat there properly next time
Mullingar Off The Beaten Path
The impressive Cathedral of Christ the King is referred to on the 'must see' list.
I found the list of priests in the entrance atrium rather interesting. The list occasionally just reads 'vicars', a somewhat polite way of saying that the town became 'protestant' at those times. The list thus neatly reflects the changing fortunes of English history as moved from being a Catholic country to a protestant one, and back again several times.

Sourbugger is no great fisherman, in fact he couldn't hook a fish finger, but if it is your thing then the following company will hire you a boat for fishing on Lake Ennell for a very reasonable 35 euro a day, or 20 without a motor.
Equipment: If you a fisherman, you'r the expert - not me.Related to:
