Wexford and Cork players.

Sounds like an event after a night of drinking.. but no, this is something that's completely different!

Hurling is one of the main sports in Ireland - it also the oldest field game played in Europe. It is a fast and aggressive sport. I've heard it described as a sort of 'aerial hockey' and that's sort of close. The players have sticks called a 'hurley' which they balance the ball on, or hit the ball whilst moving forward towards their goal. The goals are the same shape as those used for rugby, although the crossbar is lower. More points are awarded for a goal under the crossbar.

For more information about the rules go to: http://www.gaa.ie/page/all_about_hurling.html

The site for the Wexford team is listed below.

Equipment: For spectators - wear county colours, for Wexford they are purple and gold.

Although if going to see a local match don't worry about colours. :)

Gaelic Football

Along-side hurling this is the most popular sport in Ireland. (In fact AFL - Australian Football Rules, is supposed to come from Gaelic Football) Gaelic Football is another fast game, although a little less brutal than hurling, it is like a mix between soccer and rugby. For more information on this sport go to the website below.

Equipment: Spectators going to county matches wear your county colours - in Wexford's case that is purple and gold!
