    Wexford Nightlife

Lots of English/Welsh hen & stags come over to Wexford for a lost weekend. Unlike Dublin, hens & stag parties are tolerated in Wexford (within reason). Harpers will take hens, but i dont think they would take a big stag party. Well I suppose you could bring plastic willies, fake tiaras, L-plates, fake boobs, whatever... ;-))

Check out the 'Tholsel', (toll stall) on the corner of Quay Street and South Street. This building can be shown beyond the palmtrees in this photo. I was surprised to find palm trees growing here at shore of the river Barrow at New Ross, but they do! I'm still amazed.

  • Dunbrody Famine Ship

    New Ross Things to Do

A reconstruction of the sailing ship SS Dunbrody which took thousands of immigrants from famine-struck Ireland to North America. Many of them died on the voyage in horribly cramped conditions. A couple of costumed characters tell the story of why these people put themselves through this and what life was like on board. Entertaining yet poignant.

    Kilmore Quay Things to Do

It was late in the day when we had our stroll so not very much activity going on. This is a working fishing harbour as well as a leisure marina. Vessels can also be hired to take visitors out to the Saltee islands to see the puffins when they are nesting, and also if you fancy a spot of deep-sea angling.

  • Atmospherical pub.

    Kilmore Quay Restaurants

In October we only had the choice of two restaurants, so we chose this one as it looked a little more homely from the outside (and it was a pub!!). Inside there were a few local fishermen who were having a lively discussion at the bar.The whole bar and restaurant has a maritime atmosphere as there are paintings, models and arifacts from the...

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

A couple of kms from Slade is the end of the peninsula where the Atlantic comes roaring up the inlet of the Muir Ceilteach. You can walk right out to end from the carpark, but beware of the wind. The carpark also serves the shop, café and info centre where you can visit the Hook Head lighthouse. This lighthouse is the oldest operational lighthouse in the world dating from the 13th c and has 115 steps to the top. Here is the info for the guided tours :

and here for the general view :
There is also a memorial bench and stone, with a quotation from Helen Marshall's "Afterglow". It would seem that "Paul" was a diver here.

One of THE must-sees on your trip through SE Ireland. The 3 times my husband and I have been to Dunbrody Abbey together so far, we were the only ones there, which left us plenty of time to explore and take pictures. The gift shop features some excellent local crafts -- we purchased some painted "Cead Mile Failte" (A Thousand Welcomes) signs there for our front door and have received numerous compliments on them. The tea room is great for a quick snack.
