One warning about going out in Derry: After the bars and clubs close don't hang around the streets - especially Waterloo Place/William Street/Waterloo Street and the bottom of Shipquay Street. A lot of drunk teenagers spill onto the streets after closing time and some of them just can't handle their drink and they think the night's not complete without picking a good fight. And definitely don't hang around if you spot a police landrover nearby. They are THE favourite targets for practicing stone and bottle throwing.
