go to Glendalough. Even though it is pretty 'touristy' it is a very nice place. Monks used to live there years ago in a round tower which has know door... One of my fondest memories of Ireland is when I first went on a tour through Connemara. It is an absolutely beatiful spot...

visit the countryside, but you probably already knew that! Getting lost in the mountains after we decided to climb the highest mountain in sight. Running down a hill together with some 80 sheep can be fun, but this euphorical fealing goes away pretty fast when you slip and fall in their excrements!

visit 'Killarney National Park'.This is a place for hikers, and nature lovers. It is the biggest N.P. in Ireland, were you can spent a few days to walk around in the woods or at the botanical garden's of 'Muckross House'.(More info at 'Off the beaten path') the flower garden's at Muckross house are a must to visit.

by spetterke

visit the 'Peninsula of Dingle'.Starting at 'Trallee' you take the north road to 'Stradbally',along some beautiful beaches.(A few kilometers from the main road.Take a route who goes in the direction of the see)Driving over the 'Conner Pas' is a slow move, because the road is so narrow, that passing another car is always a risky job.Luckelly, busses are not permitted on this road.Look for a B+B in Dingle town. It's a lovely quiet place, still not overloaded with tourists. There are some verry pretty hiking trails north and west of Dingle town. The most beautiful ones are around 'Mount Brandon' starting at Cloghane;Around Kilmakedar starting at the Gallarus Oratory(this is a early christ chuch from the 8 th century, and looks like a boat lying upside down);Around the 'Three Sisters' starting at Smervik.Try to buy a hiking map because there are no signs on these paths. You will notice a lot of...

visit the 'Peninsula of Kerry'.BUT DON'T TAKE THE WHOLE 'KERRY WAY' AROUND.There are to many busses, and to busy.We took the narrow road over the 'Ballaghisheen Pass',ending at'Cahersiveen'.A little bit further we took the ferry-boat to Valentia Island, where you must drive the whole tour around.Follow the road to Portmagee (bridge),taking the steepiest way (26% up) of Ireland towards 'Waterville'.Driving back on the Kerry way for a while ,you can leave it again at 'Sneem',taking the narrow road's again. Stay at 'Portmagee' and when the weather is good you must take the boat to the 'Great Skellig' islands,to visit the old monks places.

Of course,at County Clare you may not miss to go to the 'Cliffs of Moher'.These majestic sandstone cliffs are about 200 meter high, and you can stand wright on the edge of it.If you are afraid of heights, don't do this.Starting at the parking place, nearby the 'O'Brien's Tower, you will be between a lot of tourists.Women with high heels, men with leather shoes, walking around and watching for their bus to leave.Put on your hiking shoes and walk away from this side, taking the path on your left side going up.After the next hill you will be almost on your own,and walk straight on, high above these cliffs, for 9 km to 'Moher Tower' on Hag's Head.To go back you can either take the same route back,or go down to the road.(see more pics in travelogue) There are a lot of birds living on these cliffs,so take your telescope with you and a little seabirdguide.

by spetterke

West of Limerick you have the County Clare, where you must visit 'the Burren'.It's a limestone plateau raised up from the see, millions of years ago,and it is as rocky as on the moon. There are also some megalitique stones;the most famous is 'Poulnabrone' (see pic)and further north of these Dolmen are the 'Ailwee Caves'.If you are a hiker, there is a 2 day hiking path through the Burren,(Burren Way),so you will experience the silence. Try to get here by sundown,on a clear day.You can take some beautiful pics then.If it is misty, you feel creepy.

Visit the south-western part:Peninsula Dingle ,Peninsula Kerry and the Nature Park of Killarney. Our best memory were the evenings inside the Irish Pub's,where social live is very important,by meeting people. You can eat very good bar-food until 10 pm,and afterwards there is always someone playing the famous Irish ballades. In fact, there is always live music in the house. And of course, drinking a Guinnes is a must, because 'It's Good For You'.

by Ian_Bevan

Travel along the smaller roads if you enjoy seeing the true country side. It's amazing how many things you will miss by sticking to the main roads. At the time of our visit the roads were relatively quiet, but off the beaten track, we hardly saw another vehicle. Some of the vista's that came into view were worth the ferry fare alone. The local people are so friendly.Always happy to help with directions, tips on where to visit, directions to avoid the 'tourist trap' routes and always ready to chat and share a drink.
